The most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel seen, supported, and capable. That means creating a safe space to make mistakes, ask questions, and grow. A good tutor doesn't just deliver content, they adapt to each student's pace, learning style, and confidence level. Ultimately, it's about building the student's self-belief and…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them patient, let them know that it is okay to make mistakes and encourage them to continue to learn and practice in order to master a skill. A can-do attitude is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I myself used to learn concepts in a way that were not theoretical but…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. Without comprehension, the tutor would not be able to communicate with the student in the same language, making it impossible for the tutor to address the issue the student is having and come up with solutions to help the student's condition. I am currently…

It is crucial to understand the particular learning style of each student as everyone is an individual. Furthermore, to remain encouraging and provide motivation where necessary, always remembering that learning is a process and that it is my role to guide the student along that process. The most important thing is to be flexible and non-judgemental. You have to be open to different challenges that the student may be facing beyond the subject. Each student is different and has different ways to learn and as such your teaching method should reflect this. I think my strengths are that I am patient but firm when teaching my students.…

I believe being able to provide individualised instructions is a crucial part of being a tutor. Tailoring teaching methods to suit the student's learning style, pace, and preferences ensures a more effective and personalised learning experience. Additionally, beyond academic achievements, a tutor should inspire a passion for learning and promote…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to empathise with them. Every student has different learning capabilities. It is important for a tutor to understand that and go the extra mile to ensure that every student is able to keep up. I believe that I have a strong grasp on math and physics subjects. I have communication skills as…

In my opinion, the most critical responsibility of a tutor is not during the teaching phase, but in the phase that comes after the lesson. After learning the theory, the student will begin practising problems related to the topic and it is during this period, that most of the learning takes place. Hence, it is important for tutors to be there to…

First and foremost, I would argue that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide motivation and encouragement; cultivating the student's desire to learn and succeed. If this is achieved, academic success simply becomes a by-product. Secondly, a tutor must act as a resource that complements learning within a school…

Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. The teacher, I believe, should be a good friend and never intimidate the students, even if they lack the necessary skills to learn the subject quickly. Communication skills, level of patience,…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

Local Reviews

Easy to organise and great tutor!
Julie, Sandringham

Inside SandringhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Ben practised solving integer equations and converting fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

Year 10, Maya reviewed the application of differentiation principles to kinematics, focusing on velocity versus speed and using the chain rule.

For Year 11, Tom worked through linear equations with CAS technology and started reviewing simple and compound interest calculations in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

Across several year levels, incomplete homework and organization have limited progress: one Year 8 student "didn't remember much in terms of LCM and HCF from last week," with homework left unfinished.

In Years 9–10, written work was sometimes messy or unclear—setting out in algebra and fraction tasks was flagged as needing improvement.

A Year 11 student used the CAS calculator for even simple sums rather than practicing manual computation, making it harder to spot errors or build confidence.

During a recent test, a senior student's stress led to forgotten methods and difficulty recalling processes under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Sandringham noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after struggling to write out her working, now uses a step-by-step "talk aloud" strategy and completes practice tests much more neatly.

In Year 12 maths, another student recently scored 81% on a tech-free SAC and is getting better at checking the wording of each question to avoid losing marks for careless mistakes—something that had tripped him up before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who found analogue time confusing can now confidently read times past the hour without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sandringham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Firbank Grammar School - Sandringham Campus.
