A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. The power of a good tutor is in his or her ability to strengthen and encourage their students, so helping them gain some momentum to keep persevering in subjects that are challenging them. This means patiently helping the students understand…

The most critical things a tutor can do are to clarify, establish a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, and help students develop independent problem-solving skills. A tutor should not only help with current school problems but also transfer self-confidence and effective study habits with which students can succeed in school. My strengths as a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student extend beyond simply imparting knowledge. Firstly, a tutor should strive to cultivate a supportive and encouraging learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Building confidence is key to academic success. Secondly, a tutor should tailor their…

The most important thing for a tutor is that they further the learning and understanding of their student. An important role of the tutor to do this is to assist the student to learn in a way they can understand. I believe that the tutor should make it easier for the student to learn the fundamental concepts. I have a strong understanding of core…

1. Providing a figure of support - It's important that a student feels comfortable asking their tutor questions and knows that they will be taken seriously no matter how simple the question may seem. 2. Encouragement - It's easy for students to lose confidence when they can't understand something, and as a tutor it's important that you can help…

Finding the right method to educate a student. The way you present your working and explanation should always suit the students learning style. Only then can the student understand the concept in depth and apply their learning to a new question. As I was once a private tutee, I understand how the tutor should explain concepts in a clear and…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

To give the student confidence and show them that the subject is not beyond their understandings. Prove that It's not difficult but needs to be approached correctly. If I can make a student begin thinking more about the subject than just a grade to obtain, I would have felt that I made one more curious person. Tutors need to be patient, not every student is equally as smart, or equally as attentive. You have to find a balance. A great example I think would be is planting a seed. After you put the seed in the ground, you can put all the water in the world, but it's not gonna grow into a tree in just one day, just like a student, you will break the…

Inside Shenton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on converting between proper and improper fractions with denominators of 10, 100, and 1000, as well as placing decimals accurately on a number line.

In Year 8, Emily revised integers and negative numbers alongside substituting values into simple algebraic expressions.

For Year 9, Sam focused on factorisation techniques and applying the first three index laws to simplify algebraic terms.

Recent Challenges

Jacob did not attempt the homework set for him last lesson, especially in advanced algebra and index laws, which limited progress with new topics.

In Year 10 Physics, skipping written diagrams made abstract problems harder to visualise and led to confusion when tackling free body questions.

For a Year 6 learner, not writing out working for fraction and subtraction tasks meant errors went unnoticed and wasted time retracing steps.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student's messy approach to telling time on clock faces made it difficult to spot where understanding broke down during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Shenton Park tutor recently noticed a big shift with Jacob in Year 10 Maths: after struggling to remember each step, he started writing out his full working for index law problems, which helped him finish homework faster and more accurately than before.

A senior student who previously hesitated to sketch graphs can now confidently draw derivatives and explain how they relate to the original function—something that used to cause confusion.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Pria has become much more proactive about telling her tutor which maths topics she finds tricky instead of guessing or staying quiet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosalie Primary School.
