Inside Soldiers HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Greta reviewed order of operations, tackled fraction and decimal conversions, and solved mixed worded problems by identifying question types and writing equations.

In Year 9, Aiden focused on trigonometry, specifically labelling triangle sides, using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios with calculators, and rearranging equations to solve for unknowns.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Charlie worked through quadratic equations including graphing parabolas to find roots and the vertex (focal point), as well as solving worded quadratic problems relevant to their current coursework.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student sometimes avoided showing written working for fraction and division tasks—one tutor noted, "improving her layout & clear written working is important as this will help her understand her own thought process."

In Year 10 algebra, a tendency to skip steps when rearranging equations made it hard to spot sign errors.

A senior student in Specialist Maths struggled with time management during tests, leading to unfinished questions and rushed answers.

Another high schooler was reluctant to communicate when they didn't understand test prompts, instead leaving answers blank or guessing, making it difficult for teachers to give targeted support.

Recent Achievements

A Soldiers Hill tutor noticed a Year 9 student who'd struggled with exponent laws quickly grasping how to apply them, even when equations were presented in unfamiliar formats—she now explains her reasoning instead of just guessing.

In Year 7 maths, one student who previously avoided reading worded problems aloud started volunteering to read tricky questions herself and used visual aids to work through solutions after initially hesitating.

Another high schooler in French, once reluctant to speak, was able to hold a simple conversation about favourite subjects by using a vocabulary list for support and then managed several basic maths equations written in French without help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Things are going very well at the moment. Much of the use Max is getting out of it is that there is time to ask questions and have detailed explanation of concepts. This is what he felt he was denied in class and was causing some degree of anxiety on his part. Brigit appears to be a good tutor for him as it is always important that he likes the person he is dealing with especially when it is in a subject area which isn't the main focus of his primary interest or ability.

After spending two years as a tutor with Ezy Math Tutoring I can only report positive experiences with the agency. Ezy Math was always professional, timely and willing to help with any queries or problems. Working with such a personalized and helpful company only enriched the already fulfilling experience of being a tutor. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Ezy Math Tutoring to any prospective tutors or students.

I am very happy with Fiona, and though we are only in the early stages of tutoring, Alyssa has made significant improvements in her attitude and confidence. Initially she was dreading tutoring, now she has embraced it. Fiona has been extremely flexible and has impressed with her professionalism and knowledge from day one. We look forward to continued success under her tuition.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ballarat Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Macarthur Street Primary School.
