The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teaching study Skills. It includes equipping students with effective learning strategies, time management techniques, and organisational tools to help them succeed beyond certain tutoring sessions. Because I am a student as well, these study skills continue to help me in my uni study or even…

I consider first getting connected with the student, understand their grasping ability of how smart or dull they are in education. The next step would be to train them accordingly and give attention on every single concept, make the subject interesting and solve problems sitting together. For example, giving real time examples in science would…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build independence. It's not just about teaching them the material it’s about empowering them to think for themselves and solve problems on their own. By encouraging self-reliance and critical thinking, I aim to give students the tools they need to succeed long after our…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build the student’s confidence, and help them develop independent learning skills. From my experience mentoring in High school, I saw how crucial it is to tailor support to each student’s needs, not just focusing on grades but also mindset. A good tutor…

Some of the most important things that a tutor can and should do for a student include: providing useful and timely support if needed, creating a supportive environment in which we can all learn and grow without being afraid of making mistakes, and helping students to identify and overcome their shortcomings to thrive academically. First, it would be to make learning fun. Second, it can be stressful for the student when they just don't seem to understand a certain topic. As a tutor, we should try to find alternatives when one method doesn't seem to work. Third, I think the best thing about being a tutor is shared learning. Sometimes, tutors just don't have the answers to…

The willingness to help and to commit time, energy, and patience. If the tutor is doing for the sake of doing, it shows the lack of commitment. I truly believe that teaching is a passion-driven job. Listen carefully to how they think about the subject - what is it that they struggle with? Why do they like/not like the subject? What do they understand and what exactly do they need assitance with? As tutors we do not want to assume how students feel or what they do or do not know. Be a good listening ear for them and available when they need…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is buiding their confidence and enjoyment of a subject that they perhaps once struggled with. I believe that if a student comes into a tutoring session each day begrudgingly with absolute hatred of a subject they won’t absorb what is being taught as well because they’d rather be somewhere…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
