I believe the best thing a tutor can do for a student is being able to understand the student's concerns and being able to implement the best strategies accordingly. This way the student can achieve the most out of tutoring sessions. Likewise, having a positive and encouraging attitude is also significant to benefit the students learning. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show them not the final answer to a question, but in detail the method in which that answer was obtained because ultimately in a test situation the student will have a completely new question in which they have to be confident in using their own methods and not simply memorised answers. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a strong base of knowledge for the students. A base of knowledge is very important as they proceed through their studies in the future, and so a tutor's job is to make sure that they understand the knowledge given now, so that they can use it for future studies I have experience working with…

I have a flexible and process-based approach to tutoring. This means that I will adjust my tutoring methods according to how well my student receive them. Furthermore, I believe that with a clear routine and a solid study plan, students can build a healthy balance between their mental health and schoolwork. Therefore, I am more inclined to help…

I believe there are no stupid students, only those who could not find the right way to learn. Firstly, I think a tutor's duty is to guide their students to the most efficient and enjoyable study methods. Secondly, a tutor should offer their students the route they need to get to the answers rather than the answers only. I encourage my students to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and to give them time to grasp a concept. Different methods of teaching should be applied in order to keep the student interested. I am patient, understanding and kind. Academic strategy encompasses two levels: overarching macro decisions involving study methods like flashcards and practice questions, and micro-level strategies assisting students in better understanding difficult concepts and drawing connections between related content.…

It is pivotal to help…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything has gotten off to a great start.  Rose is lovely and is engaging Tyler.

We are very happy with Michael. He has built up a good rapport with Jonathan and myself, he always arrives with a plan and has thought about each session in advance. My son's confidence is growing each week. He has a math test next week even though it still is early days it might give us a understanding of how things are going.

Desiree and Hyolie have Got off to a great start. Hyolie is very professional, patient and shows Desiree the relevance of everything she teaches her.  Desiree feels very comfortable with her and I look forward to a continued relationship between the two of them. I would also highly recommend Hyolie to other students.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
