The most crucial things a tutor should have are: First, the tutor's own capability to solve the questions, to organise their time and to work under pressure. Second, to become a good tutor, a person has to be able to communicate and convey their ideas fully while being able to listen and understand what is in the student's mind. Last but not…

Inspire the student to like the subject, so that in the future, even without a tutor, the student has the initiative to learn things on their own. Also, a tutor needs to make sure the student understand the concepts and not just remember how to solve a math problem without deep understanding. - With the score I have achieved in several Maths…

As a tutor, teaching concepts accurately and helping students to consolidate them are very important. However, I think teaching them effective problem solving skills are more important. I focus on guiding students to develop their own way of thinking and deriving conclusions. Being fluent in both English and Chinese Mandarin, I’m able to assist…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to see the student as his old self and teach them in this manner. If the teacher doesn’t want the student to face the same obstacles as he did, he should teach the student as hard as they can. I think my best strength is me being patient as one can be. I know that children does not have the same…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence in themselves. It’s not just about getting the right answers, but about helping them understand how to approach problems, how to think critically, and how to stay calm even when something feels difficult. I also think it’s really important to create a space…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is tailoring their teaching according to each student's need and ability. Not all students are the same, which is why tutors should be able to understand what and how the students need and think. This way, there will be no students lagging behind the others. Tutors should also be…

I believe there are two immensely important things a tutor can do for a student. First and foremost, a tutor must have faith in his/her student. Having faith means having the trust that her students have the capability to excel not just academically but, in character development as well. As a tutor, I am not only an assistant in my student’s academic work. I am also a role model whom my student will look up to. Therefore, I…

I think guidance is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. If you are looking for a tutor who will force-feed the answer to your children, I am not your person. But if you want your children to understand concepts and use higher-order thinking to solve their problems, then I can help. Another important aspect is patience.…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student become a confident and independent learner. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
