The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to impact positively on the life of the student and bring about a change. Other than helping a student reach their academic potential, a tutor can help him or her develop other skills such as critical thinking, time management and effective study skills other than rote…

In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. It's about being a guiding light through challenges, a source of motivation, and a trusted resource for…

To be patient enough to see results. Lesson plannings are crucial for students to understand the flow of their subjects. I would say I am very good at explaining things to students and I tend to change the way I teach based on different types of pupils as I understand that different people have their own unique way of learning. I believe I am…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them build confidence in their own abilities. When a student believes in themselves, they’re more likely to take on challenges, ask questions, and keep trying, even when things get tough. Motivating the student and teaching him according to his own pace is of upmost importance. Also, it is crucial that the student's marks are improving and he starts to develop a liking for that subject. One important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure communicating in a manner that motivates the student and makes them feel confident in the content they are learning. This could be by starting off with easier practice and gradually testing more of the student's abilities. This way, the student is able to warm-up with do-able questions…

I think guidance is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. If you are looking for a tutor who will force-feed the answer to your children, I am not your person. First and foremost, a tutor must have faith in his/her student. Having faith means having the trust that her students have the capability to excel not just academically but, in character development as well. As a tutor, I am not only an assistant in my student’s academic work. I am also a role model whom my student will look up to. Therefore, I…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
