I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. Patience is important for many reasons in tutoring. In my…

Also patiently answering thier queries is most important. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning less intimidating,…

The most important skill would be the ability to teach the most complex concept by breaking it down to a simpler version for the student to learn and remember lifelong. My strengths are good communication skills, flexibility, patience, understanding the students' problems, and guide them accordingly. Other strengths would include being more…

I think it is important to be approachable. When I was tutoring my classmates, I learnt that many students are left behind in their studies not because they are not willing to study, but they are too afraid to ask the teacher for any clarifications. By being approachable, the tutees could be more comfortable in asking any questions they are…

Apart from that, it's essential for a tutor to listen to students and be patient at all times. Also, tracking progress, offering constructive…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to modify his tutoring technique as per the understanding of the student. Instead of having a general tutoring pattern, it is important that a tutor first understands the mindset of the student and then tailors his technique to teach the concept in a way which is the best for the student.…

A good tutor should be able to support student with his/her grade and also lead the study in the fun way. Acting more like a friend than a teacher and make students love learning by heart is the most important thing a tutor can do. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
