Personally, I believe that there is one important thing that every tutor can do for a student: to teach the student how to learn. As a tutor, it should be our ultimate goal to help the student become an independent learner. Help them teach how to use the available resources and independently learn from them. This will help the students improve…

Literally just be there. Learning takes time and it is important that we have someone there for us to see us through or t guide us while we are learning. Empathy. I tend to be able to relate to why others are acting a certain way and that includes me being able to understand why students make certain mistakes and hence I can then go about helping…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to their problems patiently, before jumping into conclusions too quickly. Then, guide and lead them onto the right path. I am an empath person, and I often put myself in other's shoes in order to understand how they feel and think. I think that is a great quality that makes me…

There are many important things when it comes down to tutoring a student, but to state a few in their order of importance: 1. Building confidence of a student 2. Motivating them to study, and to help find the balance between play and studies, as playing and hobbies are very critical at this stage of life. 3. Being a great mentor, clarifying…

I believe there are two immensely important things a tutor can do for a student. And the second one is fostering a positive learning environment,…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you. So far so good. Sarah is very approachable and friendly, quick to respond to emails etc. and has a great collaborative style. Jake, who was skeptical of tutoring at first, has found the sessions very useful.

We are delighted with Charlie as Gabrielle's tutor. He has been prompt, polite, pleasant and extremely helpful. Within 2 sessions I could see her confidence in attacking problem solving questions had improved and approach to Maths in general.

Tammy is great.  She has a friendly manner and she is enthusiastic at every session. Lucy seems to like her and she has some great methods for teaching.  She engages Lucy and makes the sessions fun and interesting bringing things along to help Lucy understand what she is trying to teach her.  She is concentrating on what Lucy's weaknesses are while thinking ahead for Lucy for year 7. From  my observations of the sessions I think she will help Lucy enormously. I am very happy with Tammy to date and hope that she is happy to continue on with Lucy

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
