To do the exercise together with students, showing them the way of solving a particular problem so that they can repeat the process later by themselves and apply it for various problems that can be solved by the same approach. My strength as a tutor is the ability to listen to students, helping me to find out what they already know and don't, what…

I think that the best thing a tutor can do to a student is not to pressure him/her or judge him/her, if not the opposite, the best thing is to show him/her that he/she can solve the different problems and encourage him/her to solve it even if he/she has already tried several times. My strengths as a tutor are listening and effective communication,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, foster independent learning, and create a positive learning atmosphere. A tutor shouldn’t just provide answers, but instead guide students towards developing problem-solving skills and effective study habits. It’s also important to be encouraging and…

Encouraging the student that they are always capable of improving and also share appreciation for education. Basically, make the student feel comfortable and want to learn for their own sake. I believe that the best way to learn maths is to have a strong foundation in elementary mathematics. With lots of practice comes confidence and a set of…

I believe there are two immensely important things a tutor can do for a student. The first one is developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, so that a student can confidently solve problems that they haven't encountered before or when no one is there to guide them. And the second one is fostering a positive learning environment,…

A tutor can give a person confidence and that allows the individual to stay positive and encouraged to continuing learning. A tutor can also be very impactful on a student's life as they are there to help them and are another resource a student can use if they need help. I understand that everyone has a different learning pace and that our students might not be able to understand the concept of what we are teaching from the get-go. Therefore, it is very important to be understanding and patient, yet stern at the same time so that they will feel comfortable enough to ask you questions but are careful to not…

A tutor apart from offering services of tutorship has a huge impact a student's life in the following ways: 1. Encourage students to apply his/her independent mind and motivate them to think out of the box. 2. Go out of the way in exploring different options to teach the same course/study material. 3. Be available for your students and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to treat all students as individuals and know their strengths and weaknesses. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
