To be patient, not all students are the same and don't learn at the same pace. You need to adapt in your ability to change for each student so that their learning and understanding can be maximised. My ability to be flexible and adapt to different students, and change teaching styles to suit…

A tutor is not there to do a student's homework for them but rather to help them think and problem solve in new ways so that they can complete their work more effectively and be a more independent learner. Thus, a tutor can help by bringing with themselves a large amount of knowledge in the subject area(s) and by having a patient and understanding…

To be a supportive but at the same time critical tutor is important, as not only to accompany students general well being, but also to ensure they are learning efficiently and effectively in excell in any subject. Student's want to improve, but also enjoy and have fun while learning, so I think a tutoring experience that accomodates that is the…

Inside SpenceTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sam focused on representing numbers and practiced addition and subtraction strategies, including the compensation method, to build confidence with basic operations.

In Year 8, Caledon worked on factorising quadratic expressions using the PSN method and revisited how to solve equations in standard form (mx+c), discussing the meaning of gradient and intercepts.

Meanwhile, Anise in Year 12 tackled applying the chain rule to differentiate compound functions and explored algebraic manipulation through challenging extension questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly forgot to complete assigned homework, which meant less time spent consolidating key methods between lessons; as one tutor noted, "he hadn't finished the homework assigned last week."

In Year 9 maths, another student's written work became hard to follow when mathematical grammar—such as correct use of the equals sign—was inconsistent.

During a Year 3 English task, difficulty proofreading led to missed capitalisation errors and confusion over basic grammar.

Without clear lesson planning in a recent session, learning darted between topics, leaving gaps unaddressed and making it harder for students to build on prior knowledge.

Recent Achievements

One Spence tutor noticed a high school student, Caledon, who used to hesitate with multi-step algebra problems now solving several on his own without needing hints—last week he finished his set entirely unaided.

Another secondary student, Anise, previously unsure about logarithms, was able to correctly choose and apply the right log law even in fully abstract variable questions.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had avoided reading aloud began volunteering to read passages and now checks her answers by referencing the book independently after each comprehension question.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are extremely pleased with Hilario and would be happy to recommend him to anyone. Alison is a bit picky and Maths is a subject she hates but feedback from her has been really positive. She commented this morning that if her school teachers were like him, she wouldn't have been having issues with Maths.

I am really happy with Gabriele and the confidence she is providing the girls in their maths.

Both Amber and myself are very happy with the first two lessons Kamen has given. He has a great way of making Amber at ease with the learning process and we look forward to seeing her maths improve.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Rogers Primary School.
