In my mind, not only a tutor provides knowledge for a student but also brings out their best characteristics. During the teaching procedures, a tutor can help student to learn better the subject, be fond of it, and through that teaches them social skills or practical application. Through my past experience as a teaching assistant, I develop my…

I believe that building a strong teacher-student relationship is the most important thing. Most students who seek for tutoring are either aiming to break their limits, or catch up with others. Both motivation requires significant support from their peers, thus, as a tutor, building a strong TSR can robustly improve students' learning motivation.…

I will give honest feedback and explain concepts in different ways to ensure that students understand not only where to improve but also how to improve. I think effective learning comes from mastering the fundamentals before moving onto the details. Learning is about stretching the boundary one percent again-and-again over time. This ensures…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence, not just improve grades. A great tutor helps students believe in their own ability to learn, even when things feel tough. Its also about creating structure, consistency, and genuine encouragement. At the end of the day, tutoring isn't just about teaching content, its about helping…

The first point is to care about the psychology of the students and to acknowledge their efforts and dedication in a timely manner. When encountering problems, counsellors should remain patient and attentive, guiding students to think about difficult points and broadening their ideas. The second point is to identify the student's weaknesses…

The most important things a tutor can do are build the student's confidence, adapt to their learning style, and make complex concepts clear and relatable. I think the most important thing is to understand the student's cognitive ability and be able to relate to their world. Giving them examples using whatever they're into, for example, cartoons/video games, in order to teach a concept goes a long way. There isn't a bible when it comes to teaching, it's an evolving process, which gets better over…

Making classes interesting and for the students to actually be able to consolidate what they learnt is a great achievement for a tutor. As someone who has personally experienced anxiety due to academic pressure, I deeply understand how stress can block learning. I believe that as a tutor, what I can help with most is finding out the missing links in the knowledge network of my students and helping them to make those up. Build confidence, encourage participation and motivation, be supportive and promote independence. A combination of all these factors will achieve results, which is ultimately the goal. Beyond imparting subject knowledge, a tutor should instill a passion for the subject, helping…

Inside SpotswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia worked through the full chapter on polynomials, including applying the factor and remainder theorems and solving cubic equations, with time spent sketching cubic graphs from equations.

Year 10 student Ethan focused on advanced quadratic techniques such as completing the square and tackling past exam questions, plus reviewed graph domains and ranges using practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ava explored Pythagoras' theorem alongside SOH CAH TOA for right-angled triangles, then practised algebraic expansion and binomial expansions to build confidence ahead of a test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, a student repeatedly left their workbook at home, leading to extra time spent reconstructing missed examples rather than practicing equations, as one tutor noted.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for exams tended to focus only on textbook questions they already found easy, avoiding unfamiliar problem types—this limited exposure to the trickier material expected in assessments.

In senior years, several students submitted incomplete homework or skipped revision of past exam topics, which meant gaps persisted in areas like circular functions and piecewise graphs; essential feedback was missed and confidence lagged when new question styles appeared.

Recent Achievements

Now confidently tackles all types of factorisation problems, a Year 10 student in Spotswood who used to struggle with factorisation is even choosing new approaches without prompting.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who would previously hesitate when faced with tough SOH CAH TOA and Pythagoras questions began identifying her own mistakes and quickly grasped index laws that once seemed intimidating.

Meanwhile, one of the primary students has started asking for help instead of quietly skipping hard questions—this week she explained which homework step confused her before trying again herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Spotswood Primary School.
