As a tutor, I think it is very important to make sure that a student does not lose hope. Even in moments of distress, it is my responsibility that the student does not lose confidence in his abilities. Losing confidence or hope is the worst thing that can happen before an exam. It is also important to develop a trusting relationship with a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and offer consistent support. A good tutor helps a student feel heard, respected, and capable. Beyond just teaching academic content, I believe it’s about empowering students — making sure they know their struggles are valid and that improvement is always possible. Tutors should guide,…

Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. Acknowledging one's own failure and encouraging students to learn from his/her mistakes rather than losing hope. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ask them for constant feedback/questions. Some students are hesitant to ask questions when they are confused, which can easily lead to them not understanding content. Hence, it is important as a tutor to actively make sure that your student actually understands what you are teaching. As a…

I believe ultimately, the most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment where when asked "Do you understand?", the student feels free to say "Nope". This honesty is priceless and very helpful in identifying knowledge-gaps early. I pride myself on being patient. I was a slow learner, and often had questions which were ignored or…

Instead only focus on academic results, study ability and habit is more important. Tutors can only help students in school time to support their study, anything beyound school and further into the society needs student's own capabilities. These capabilities are crucial to their personal success. In my opinion, the following question reflects the…

Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Scarlett practised breaking up four- and six-digit numbers in non-standard ways to build place value understanding, and explored how rearranging digits changes number size.

Year 11 student Sam worked through algebra basics, graphing linear equations, and used the law of cosines to solve trigonometry problems involving similar triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ella focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving—and applied her knowledge to real-world contexts like calculating tax and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student expressed feeling overwhelmed by multi-step word problems, often unsure how to break them down; as one tutor noted, "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 10, missing key details in finance and algebra questions led to incomplete answers—skipped questions on a practice test remained unattempted until prompted.

For Year 11, not reviewing all test topics resulted in missed easy marks in rates and ratios, simply because those areas were set aside.

When reading exam questions too quickly in senior years, students lost points from overlooked instructions or misapplied formulas.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11, Kiera had struggled to confidently set up algebraic equations, but she filled out an entire interest table on her own after just a bit of prompting—she even tackled several practice test questions she'd previously avoided and got half of them right without guessing.

Raphael (Year 7) used to need help for every step with algorithms; now he completes most questions solo and explains his reasoning clearly when asked.

Meanwhile, Scarlett in Year 3 has started asking how to spell unfamiliar words instead of skipping them, showing new initiative during writing tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters / Sydenham Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peters Public School.
