I think enthusiasm is important - I have found in my own studies that when someone isn't enthusiastic about what they are teaching, it can easily dampen one's own ability to take on information. As i mentioned, being patient and encouraging is key to making students feel confident in their learning. Finally, being organised so that when the lesson…

A tutor should provide a learning environment where students can build their confidence in academic performance. I believe it is crucial to get students engaged enthusiastically in the subjects and be open to their questions. The most important thing a teacher can teach a student is something about how they learn best, like what techniques, environements, etc. they need to learn effectively. This is not only a skill that will help them any time they need to learn something in the future, but also something that will help them enjoy the process. I think I have excellent…

Make them a good person. Academics is important, but they also need to realize the purpose of education other than capitalistic schemes. Another thing is how a student can start to excel their academia without even realizing it. Good communication skills. Friendly environment. I like to be friends with my students rather than being a teacher. This…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in a student. After a tutoring session, the goal should not be for a student to be able to complete their homework. Instead, the student should gain an understanding of the topic such that they can complete future coursework without the help of a tutor. If that…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. Think to pass the belief that the student can achieve the goal. It is just the matter of working hard and maybe trying different approach. And also not comparing yourself to other students, because everyone is unique. I, myself, was in a situation where I had very low marks in Math and Science subjects, but I worked hard and I saw my brain change…

The most important role that a tutor can play in the betterment of students is to help them build self-efficacy as the "can-do" attitude solves multiple problems. The self believe helps the student gain confidence which will eventually play a role in their academic learning. The motivation of being successful in gaining mathematical skills often…

Fantastic help to my daughter across biology and maths. As well as the technical aspect has been brilliant for her confidence in the HSC year. Highly recommended.
Annie, Summer Hill

Inside Summer HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ruby focused on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and consolidating times tables knowledge.

In Year 8, Sam worked through solving trigonometric equations with domain restrictions and explored the general domain and range of functions using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack practiced finding intersections of linear lines by solving simultaneous equations and reinforced skills in graphing linear equations accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 trigonometry, skipping the combination of transformations and domain/range meant errors crept into graphing tasks—"struggled to combine and utilise both transformations," a tutor observed.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot algebraic simplification rules, especially when incorrectly canceling terms, slowing progress on simultaneous equations.

For a Year 6 learner, confusion about measurement conversions persisted; even after practice, confidence lagged when converting units in problem sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to attempt worded problems independently and stayed quiet when confused in probability lessons. This led to missed opportunities for feedback and slower growth in reasoning skills.

Recent Achievements

A Summer Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to get distracted is now working through macroeconomics discussion questions with genuine focus and is contributing ideas, not just listening passively.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with simultaneous equations has started speaking up as soon as she's unsure—last session, she finished all her graphing problems without prompting.

In primary years, one student who would often guess at answers in maths is now stopping to check his reasoning out loud before moving on; last lesson he completed his entire perimeter worksheet correctly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashfield Municipal Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
