I consider patience and dedication to be the most valuable qualities a tutor can provide. The student needs to feel supported in a learning environment to succeed, especially if it is a subject they aren't particularly strong at. As a former HSC student, I honestly felt the 'tough love' approach some tutors had would deter me from wanting to study…

As a tutor, I firmly believe in the profound impact that effective education can have on a student's life. Drawing from my experience in teaching as a CSR activity, I recognize several essential aspects that I consider crucial in nurturing a student's growth and learning journey. 1. Fostering Understanding: One of the most important things I…

I believe a good tutor is making the student understand what they are learning but not how to get good result in their exam. Base of my past experience in attending tuition, my tutors tend to explain mathematics theorem in detail so we could understand them better and not only just to memorise when to use the formula. Also I believe practice makes…

The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

I think, the main part is understanding. Tutor should help students in understanding of the concepts and their purpose. Secondly, tutor should be understanding, so that he/she serves students according to their needs as different students have different ways of visualising things. Thirdly, tutor should help in planning of the subject so that…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is be supportive. Students are already frustrated when they do not understand something, hence we do not need to add to that by being frustrated at them. In addition, a tutor needs to be flexible. This allows one to better tailor the program to the student's needs and the student's strengths. I…

I believe that creating a comfortable environment for the student is one of the most important things a tutor can do. I believe ultimately, the most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment where when asked "Do you understand?", the student feels free to say "Nope". This honesty is priceless and very helpful in identifying knowledge-gaps early. I pride myself on being patient. I was a slow learner, and often had questions which were ignored or…

Tutors have to be cooperative and empathetic to teach students. Moreover, they need to embody leadership qualities. Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. Fantastic help to my daughter across biology and maths. As well as the technical aspect has been brilliant for her confidence in the HSC year. Highly recommended.
Annie, Summer Hill

Inside Summer HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ruby focused on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and consolidating times tables knowledge.

In Year 8, Sam worked through solving trigonometric equations with domain restrictions and explored the general domain and range of functions using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack practiced finding intersections of linear lines by solving simultaneous equations and reinforced skills in graphing linear equations accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 trigonometry, skipping the combination of transformations and domain/range meant errors crept into graphing tasks—"struggled to combine and utilise both transformations," a tutor observed.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot algebraic simplification rules, especially when incorrectly canceling terms, slowing progress on simultaneous equations.

For a Year 6 learner, confusion about measurement conversions persisted; even after practice, confidence lagged when converting units in problem sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to attempt worded problems independently and stayed quiet when confused in probability lessons. This led to missed opportunities for feedback and slower growth in reasoning skills.

Recent Achievements

A Summer Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to get distracted is now working through macroeconomics discussion questions with genuine focus and is contributing ideas, not just listening passively.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with simultaneous equations has started speaking up as soon as she's unsure—last session, she finished all her graphing problems without prompting.

In primary years, one student who would often guess at answers in maths is now stopping to check his reasoning out loud before moving on; last lesson he completed his entire perimeter worksheet correctly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashfield Municipal Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
