I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is teach a student how to be conscientious in their work, how to learn effectively and efficiently, and problem solve for themselves. These traits are important life skills that can be gained through education/schooling that they will inevitably have to apply in their maturation into…

Providing as much detail in feedback and marking somewhat harsher than what is needed so that students are benefiting from as much feedback so that they can improve. With this feedback, providing very specific examples of how to improve instead of saying generalised criticisms. Create links with stuff that's already been learnt so that students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy learning…

In my mind, not only a tutor provides knowledge for a student but also brings out their best characteristics. During the teaching procedures, a tutor can help student to learn better the subject, be fond of it, and through that teaches them social skills or practical application. To me, a tutor can make learning real, relevant and interesting.Tutor can make learning relevant to students's interest which in itself is half the battle won as research has proved that one learns things quickly if those aligns to one's interest. For e.g., a student who like solving maths puzzles will quickly learn new formulas and other things…

Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. I believe it is the confidence that tutors can develop in their students, so that the stress and nervousness is lessened when it comes to taking the end-of-year exams, or even just a simple test. Also, to be able to cultivate an understanding and mutual relationship with the student so that there is no shyness or hesitation when it comes to asking…

Inside Sunshine NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Allegra worked through ordering fractions on a number line and practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions in revision exercises.

In Year 10, Jayden completed practice exams for an upcoming maths test, focusing on applying algebraic techniques and problem-solving under timed conditions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Arjun focused on quadratic equations by learning to use the quadratic formula and mastering the discriminant to solve for unknown constants and intersection points.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student relied heavily on memorization in Methods and hesitated to use the graphic calculator efficiently, slowing progress with quadratic problems. As a tutor noted, "needs much more practice with the graphic calculator… and mastering the quadratic formula."

In contrast, a Year 5 student repeatedly forgot to bring books home or complete homework, making it hard to track content or prepare for upcoming lessons—she arrived without materials and struggled to recall past work.

Organization lapses and inconsistent revision led both students to forget key methods or feel unprepared when new topics appeared, leaving them frustrated in-session.

Recent Achievements

One Sunshine North tutor recently noticed a Year 7 student who used to avoid asking for help now regularly pauses to check her understanding before moving on, showing much more initiative than in earlier sessions.

In high school, a Year 10 student who once needed step-by-step guidance with circular functions can now recall key values and solve complex questions mentally. Last week she completed advanced problems under timed conditions with minimal prompting.

Another win came from a Year 12 maths session where the student applied newly learned formulas to trickier graphing questions and immediately explained her reasoning back to the tutor without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernadette's School.
