Tutors need to listen properly. Students always give signs as to how they learn best, and paying attention to those signs is paramount. Also, clear communication at their pace goes a long way. Tailoring tuition to every individual student is the best possible way we can provide value, and deliver results! I'm good at offering both visual…

I think one of the best things a tutor can do is inspire confidence within a student and believe in them in situations where they don't believe in themselves. I also think it's important that the students know they can ask you any question and not feel ashamed about not getting it. My patience and compassionate nature will have a positive impact…

I believe the most important thing I can do for my students is create a space where they are comfortable to make mistakes and learn from them. A tutor should provide a judgement free-zone to help the student view studying as something positive rather than negative. As someone who is currently studying in the field of Engineering, I am fully aware…

One-on-one tutors get to provide a learning experience different to the one offered in the classroom because it is a more individual form of teaching where the tutor can sync in with the pace of the student and address the student's own problems. It is important for tutors to be able to identify these weak areas or gaps in their students knowledge…

The most important is to break the ice and make the student as comfortable as possible. It is important to communicate to the student that just because they do not understnd sometihing now, does not mean that they cannot improve and eventually understand. Another important factor is to consider the personality and learning preferance of the…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence to participate in class activities outside of the tutoring session. My most valued moments of tutoring my maths student are when she came back to a session and told me that she participated in class discussions and answered questions in class. I believe it is…

The number one thing a tutor can do for a student is to tap into the student's enjoyment of a subject. I believe that if a tutor can find a way of introducing the student to a subject in a way that the student can enjoy it, all the hard work is done, and the good grades will follow. I am a good communicator, so I like to form good relationships…

The most crucial role of a tutor is to assist students in acquiring the ability to develop their own problem-solving skills. This empowers them to independently navigate through challenges without the ongoing need for external guidance, as they develop the necessary skills to tackle problems on their own. My strengths lie in my capacity to adapt…

I have a deep understanding of concepts, not just formulas or procedures. I understand the reasoning behind each step, its applications,…

The best kind of confidence builder is being able to understand something on your own so the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to get the student to a point where they don't need a tutor anymore. Of course, a tutor is there for the student academically. However, the most important thing a tutor can provide is confidence in the students. Be able to change how they teach to best suit about the student. It's a learning experience from both sides, and the tutor should be patient enough to be able to change the way they explain the particulars so that the student is able to understand the best. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just explaining the content. First, a tutor should make the student feel comfortable asking questions — even the ones they think are “silly.†When a student feels safe to speak up, real learning starts. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is not just focus on changing the grades. Woollaston, Candice.T, Thornlands

Inside ThornlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as calculating simple interest using real-world money examples.

In Year 9, James worked through solving simultaneous linear equations and explored applications of the Pythagoras Theorem with step-by-step problem breakdowns.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia focused on calculus by applying the first principle of differentiation to functions and also tackled trigonometric equations involving radians and the unit circle.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts when practicing trigonometric angles and struggled to communicate their process clearly; as noted, "Needs more practice with quadrants and finding the angle's value in each of those quadrants."

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student often guessed subtraction answers instead of writing out working steps, which led to repeated confusion with multi-step problems.

In Year 3 English, avoidance of assigned reading homework slowed vocabulary growth—writing tasks lacked variety and structure as a result.

The moment a problem was skipped or rushed, small errors quietly compounded in later topics.

Recent Achievements

One Thornlands tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of struggling, could replicate max/min calculus problems accurately and explain each step without prompting.

Another high schooler showed genuine progress in algebra: previously confused by polynomials and piecewise functions, she now draws graphs independently and tackles quadratic questions with a clear method.

In primary, Lily—who used to rush through pattern tasks—now pauses to check her work and solves patterns for 2s and 3s with less help than before. Last week, she completed an entire contractions worksheet confidently on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Point Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bay View State School.
