Legal Studies Tutor Newcastle, NSW
A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

I believe an important component of tutoring is patience, ensuring that the student completely understands the topic before moving on. This leads into following up. Following up the previous session for a couple of minutes in the next lesson is highly beneficial as the student can show their understanding of the topic, allowing the opportunity to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are fostering a deep understanding of the subject, providing personalized guidance, boosting confidence, and encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills. My strengths as a tutor include vast knowledge on a wide range of topics, patience in explaining concepts, adapting to…

Gracie, she has been very accommodating and has had the patience to work with my son. Even though I have not met her in person, she seems to be very dedicated.

Inside Tighes HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tyler focused on adding and subtracting decimals and fractions, as well as rounding numbers up and down, using exercises from his school maths booklet in preparation for a grading exam.

For Year 10, recent lessons covered domain and range of functions—using simple graphs to visualise intervals—and solving simultaneous equations by rearranging formulas.

A senior student worked through financial mathematics topics including depreciation methods and calculating dividend yields for shares, alongside practicing simple and compound interest problems with real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, a student's workbook was "a little more organised and tidy but we will work on that for next year"—messy layout slowed review of decimal multiplication and long division.

A Year 10 student struggled with confidence after a difficult practice test, losing track of which algebraic processes to use and mixing up rules; as the tutor noted, "Danika got a little confused with which processes to use and got them mixed up often."

In Extension 1 Maths, another student hesitated to attempt unfamiliar problems without prompting, replying "I don't know" too quickly instead of problem-solving aloud. This reluctance left some trigonometry revision unfinished.

Recent Achievements

One Tighes Hill tutor recently noticed Danika, a high school student, now regularly prepares questions from class ahead of sessions—whereas before she'd just wait for help—showing real initiative in her learning.

In another session, Liz was able to explain tricky z-score problems back to the tutor and confidently justify her answers, which is a big shift from earlier sessions where she hesitated to speak up about her thinking.

With a Year 6 student, Lara showed new persistence by tackling harder times tables under timed conditions; she used to give up quickly but this time kept working until personal best of 32 correct answers in 100 seconds.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Jacob loved his first lesson with Nicholas and he can't wait til next week to do it again.

Nick explains the concepts well and has also given him extra work to help on the things he needs to practice.

Mohammad is fantastic. He puts in a great deal of effort to motivate Matthew. He comes prepared and ready to teach.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mayfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tighes Hill Public School.
