The important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not be the driver of the student's journey, but instead an instructor. To set out a pathway for the student and foster individuality within them. A tutor must develop such a relationship that in the instance the student is to give a biography, they mention their tutor as a vital part of their…

I don't hope to replace the school teachers completely. However 1 to 1 and smaller group engagements would help put in a more personal touch that would minimize the weakness of the student, bring the best out of them and build character (patience, resilience, analytical thinking) to supplement them to succeed in their education journey Analytical…

Every student have different abilities and way of understanding things. It is very important for a tutor to understand these things so that it would be easy to convey knowledge to student in their preferred way. I believe the concepts of mathematics are not so mystical. It is only the terms that makes mathematics hard but if it is explained in…

According to me two most important principles in a tutor are patience and trust. Building trust makes the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, make mistakes. Having patience also goes a long way in building that trust, so that the student can actually enjoy the learning process. I believe I can bring value to the role through my…

As a tutor, I believe the most important things a teacher could do for their students is making them feel encouraged and secured. Promoting education in today's society is something that should be dominated and put first. In my eyes, a child's education is the first step towards a child's success. Encouraging students and providing them with a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is build confidence and spark an interest for learning. I would do this by encouraging a growth mindset and applying school concepts to the real world to show students that school learning does relate to the real world and doesn't just remain in the books. This is something I personally found…

I think building a students confidence is the most important part of teaching. By introducing them to methods they can use to problem solve for themselves, a whole world opens up for them. All students learn and understand in different ways; some are visual learners, others learn best off a textbook etc. Therefor the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding and patient, especially when the student doesn't understand something. In my opinion, one of the key aspects for a tutor is to grasp how much a student knows about a specific topic and at what pace they catch up. By assessing this, the tutor can then tailor classes to suit the student's needs and optimize the learning process. As a tutor, my strengths lie in a genuine enjoyment of teaching and a knack for simplifying…

Tutors must build the confidence of their students - they can't just teach them the content and expect them to be able to do it on their own - its more than that. Inside ToongabbieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aman focused on solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, and also practised graphing linear equations from given formulas.

Year 11 student Grace revised differentiation techniques for trigonometric functions as part of the Stage 6 Maths Advanced calculus curriculum, then moved to integration problems involving exponentials and logarithms.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya tackled Financial Mathematics by calculating compound interest and worked through sequences in arithmetic series, reinforcing these with targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's tendency to copy notes too quickly led to missing signs—"he would be copying notes but miss a sign or two because he go past too fast"—resulting in confusion when factorising expressions.

For a Year 11 trigonometry graphing task, another struggled with interpreting questions that were "a little wordy," making it harder to tackle exam-style problems without pausing to fully read instructions.

In both cases, the urge to rush or avoid careful reading meant extra time was spent fixing errors rather than building fluency with more challenging material.

Recent Achievements

During a Toongabbie tutoring session, Grace, a high school student, tackled her recent exam with noticeably greater independence. She earned most of her marks in financial mathematics and statistics after previously hesitating on multi-step problems.

Another tutor noted Oliver, also in high school, who now solves financial calculation questions quickly and confidently, having struggled before to select the right formulas without prompting.

Meanwhile, Isaac in Year 6 has started asking clarifying questions about his assignments rather than waiting for hints. This shows a real shift from passive participation to active engagement during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Primary School.
