I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment in which the pupil feels encouraged to ask questions. Without a certain degree of security or familiarity, most kids are too nervous or shy to ask questions and thus are left with a minimalistic understanding of a topic, instead of the deeper understanding they could gain by…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the one-on-one attention that is not given to them in schools with large class sizes. The student needs to be able to feel comfortable enough to ask questions (even the embarrassing ones) and they need to know that the tutor will sit with them for as long as it takes to…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to understand the learning ability of a student. Each student has a different capacity to grasp concepts and learning to be patient and adapt to the student's individual needs while also being able to ensure that the content is covered is essential. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

At the end of the day, all the work in the learning process is done by the student, my main goal as a tutor is to get them started in such process, to catalyse the natural drive we all have to understand the world around us. I always aim to be enthusiastic, patient and empathetic, trying to…

I believe that every subject has the potential to be made fun and exciting for any student, and so naturally the tutor should be able to be inspiring and excited to teach and learn alongside their pupil. Alongside this, tutors need to be adaptable, being willing to communicate to different students based on their levels and understanding, while…

The most important things for a tutor is to put in their effort during and before tutoring by preparing the lessons correctly so that the students feel that the tutor is there to help them learn. Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. One need not always be a great teacher to be a great intellect. My capacity for empathy is unmatched. I can put myself in…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is listen. There may be other things going on either at home or at school that is preventing students from reaching their academic goals and the best way to foster a student-tutor relationship is to that you're there for them and that you understand what they're going through, in order to…

Local Reviews

Very easy to deal with. Lots of great tutors and they go to great lengths to match the right tutor to the students needs. If for any reason the tutor selected does not 'fit' with the students requirements, Ezymath are more than happy to keep trying alternate tutors until they find the right match.

Inside ToorakTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Raef worked through dividing large numbers by 8 using a breakdown strategy, compared fractions and decimals, and solved number pattern problems in his maths homework.

Year 8 student Lucette focused on surface area calculations as well as angles, trigonometry, and Pythagoras' theorem, tackling practice questions to reinforce understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Maya practiced solving linear equations and inequalities along with simplifying algebraic expressions using index laws.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student hesitated to write out full working for maths problems, saying "I can do this in my head," which led to missed details—especially in multi-step word questions.

During a Year 8 algebra session, work was messy and unstructured; the tutor noted that "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

One Year 10 student did not complete homework before the lesson and struggled to recall last week's concepts, making it harder to tackle new material.

In another instance, a senior student forgot formulas due to scattered notes and weak organization. This left her searching for basics instead of building on them.

Recent Achievements

In a recent Toorak tutoring session, a Year 8 student who used to freeze up with linear equations began working through problems without hesitation, even explaining his logic aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student—who'd often skip checking her answers—took the initiative to review and correct every question on her latest maths test, catching errors herself for the first time.

For a younger learner in Year 3, games and flashcards have transformed times tables from anxiety into something he looks forward to; last week, he confidently tackled division questions that once made him nervous.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Geelong Grammar School - Toorak campus.
