Aside from the knowledge that you will share, it is patience, understanding the intellectual capacity of the student as well as their behavior are the things to consider to be a maths tutor. I believe the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, and provide clear explanations that make challenging concepts easier to understand. A tutor should not only help improve academic results but also encourage independent…

One of the most important things that a maths tutor can do is actually get to know the student as well as their learning style in order to be able to make a real impact on the student's learning. Another key thing that a tutor can do identify the areas that the student needs extra help in in order to focus on these which could involve asking a few…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy…

To me, a maths tutor can make learning real, relevant and interesting.Tutor can make learning relevant to students's interest which in itself is half the battle won as research has proved that one learns things quickly if those aligns to one's interest. For e.g., a student who like solving maths puzzles will quickly learn new formulas and other…

A tutor should provide comprehensive feedback for students once they understand specific problems students are having. They perhaps can offer solutions to problems students are struggling with. I have familiarised myself with and completed the VCE courses and STEM subjects, so I would have a decent understanding of how to work with students…

The most important thing a maths tutor should do for a student is to make the concepts clear for a particular topic instead of just mugging up the concept. Also the tutor must be able to solve all queries by patiently listening. I am good at explaining a concept in the most easy way available. Also I first listen to the students problem so that I…

At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a maths tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do…

In my opinion, a maths tutor is not just for supporting a student to complete his assessments and helping them to solve questions. A tutor has an even more close connection with a student than his school teacher. Hence he has a better chance to identify what is the level of a particular student and what support he or she actually needs. Other…

First and foremost helping the student to develop logic, as logic is everywhere, and making them understand each problem before solving it. The most important way would be to change the way of learning. Finally, the main part would be to increase their grades, so that they can enroll in world-reputed universities and colleges in the near future…

Inside TullamarineTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Adam focused on distinguishing between prime and composite numbers and converting percentages to decimals, while also practising how to change mixed numbers into improper fractions.

In Year 8, Jasmine worked through simplifying algebraic expressions and factorisation, then solved linear equations with real examples.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lucas tackled problems involving the area and circumference of circles as well as applying the formula for the area of a trapezium using step-by-step calculations.

Recent Challenges

Homework was left incomplete across several year levels.

In Year 7, an algebraic expressions task and a linear equation worksheet were not finished; the tutor noted, "he attempted only half of the assigned problems before moving on."

A Year 8 student working on factorisation also submitted partial work, often skipping written steps when solutions got tricky.

Messy or unstructured working made it hard to spot calculation errors in Year 6 fraction exercises—scratchings crowded margins, making review difficult.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 3 multiplication tended to rely on oral answers rather than writing out full tables, which led to gaps during class revision.

Recent Achievements

One Tullamarine tutor noticed a big change in Bella (Year 4), who used to need step-by-step support with subtraction but now tackles problems with borrowing by herself.

In Year 7 maths, a student who'd been hesitant about algebra is completing textbook exercises independently on representing variables and simplifying expressions—last week they even finished most of their yearly exam corrections without prompting.

Meanwhile, a high school art student has started experimenting with digital photo manipulation for their project after initially struggling to find inspiration; this week, they produced an unexpected new look using Photoshop's pen tool and gradient map.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladstone Park Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tullamarine Primary School.
