We went through a number of algebraic problems and solving the turning points of quadratics. It seems they use the calculators for this and haven't been taught differential calculus. I showed her another method that can help in cases with two x-intercepts.
I've suggested Iris work on simple arithmetic, and not reach for the calculator for simple problems. While strictly unnecessary, this does improve mental sharpness in mathematics.
Iris surprised me by how quickly her mental arithmetic had sharpened.
