A tutor has the opportunity to encourage confidence in students. Not solely confidence that they can achieve highly, but confidence that they can give anything a go and learn and improve as they do. A tutor can present things in an engaging way to encourage the student to be open-minded to things they may have discounted because they seem…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

I believe one of the most important things a biology tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

I believe that the most important thing as a biology tutor is to listen to each individual student's needs and adjust my techniques and approaches of teaching to meet the learning styles of the student. The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills…

The most important things a biology tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a biology tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. The student must be able to reproduce the content learned in their own words at their own time. Specifically for English, many students have wonderful, original ideas in their minds, however,…

I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. I think that a biology tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors…

I think being patient with someone and allowing them to grow in their own way and learn and figure things out is something very important for a tutor to understand. I will challenge students to do questions out of their comfort zone as I believe that is the best way to grow, but only after I know that they understand the basics have a strong…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. All of these examples show a great tutor. - I put a lot of care into my work. - I love seeing others thrive through my help. - I…

Inside Unley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Noah focused on long and short division as well as strategies for rounding numbers to the nearest place value, using both school homework and targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Ella worked through algebraic expressions by collecting like terms and expanding brackets, then tackled practice questions involving probability of events with sample spaces.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Matilda prepared for her upcoming maths test by revising exponentials and also completed key sections of her biochemistry assignment, discussing concepts like electronegativity and dipoles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra work revealed a tendency to "skip showing steps in working," making it difficult to spot and fix sign errors; as noted, "more care needs to be taken in formatting her working out."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 Biology, an assignment draft was only worked on during lessons—independent progress at home lagged behind, impacting readiness for deadlines.

For a primary student, over-reliance on calculators emerged when practicing times tables and rounding, which slowed recall of basic facts.

In one session, a lack of confidence meant questions weren't asked even when confusion arose about worded problems.

Recent Achievements

One Unley Park tutor recently saw a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to work through practice tests alone, started completing most homework independently and only needed help with the last two questions.

In another session, a Year 8 student who previously waited for every prompt now tries solving algebra problems solo—she explained her process out loud and pinpointed mistakes herself when shown.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a younger student went from needing reminders to forming sentences using new words each week without any prompting. At the end of one lesson, she read her sentences aloud on her own initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Unley Civic Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Walford Anglican School for Girls.
