Teach the student how to learn. Each student has the capability to learn the HSC curriculum at a high level but does not know how to approach it effectively. If I can indirectly teach the student how to properly approach mathematics while teaching him/her the questions, then I have succeeded. 1. Understanding the way the student has thought…

- The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to make them feel like they are not alone and that they can do it. We all have been in their shoes and no tutor can truly say their high school experience was easy. I find the best way to relate to my students is to share my experience, my struggles and triumphs. - In addition, I…

Instilling a passion for the subject they're tutoring in the student. I truly believe that enjoyment of a subject yields higher results, so I try my best to implant in my students a love for and dedication in the subject I tutor, learnt from my own personal joy in the subjects I teach. I believe my strengths as a tutor to be my persistence. This…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to teach that student the necessary tools for them to take responsibility of their own learning. It is absolutely my belief that students are able to successfully answer questions they deem "too hard" if only they consider the elements of the difficult question in more depth. This is…

I think a good tutor needs to first and foremost be able to understand the level of their student in order to help them improve. I also think that being able to re-explain mathematical theories and concepts in alternative ways is essential in helping students to fully comprehend the subject. I feel patience is key, but a good tutor also needs to…

I believe that the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to guide them to understand concepts instead of giving them formulae to memorize or solutions to copy. By helping a student realize their own potential to solve problems by honing their strengths and finding methods that work for them, it gives a student confidence in…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence to tackle questions by themselves. Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and make…

There are a number of short-term and long-term goals I have for my students/mentees: In the short-term, I seek to make material engaging and more easily digestible. The most important thing a a maths tutor can do for a student is to be understanding. The process for the student to absorb the content may take time, hence it is paramount for a tutor to be patient and articulately explain the concepts in detail. Inside VaucluseTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie worked on improving confidence with fractions and decimals, using number lines to visualise equivalence.

For Year 9, Ava focused on algebraic inequalities and started exam preparation by reviewing budget questions from her syllabus.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel concentrated on Module C English by planning and scaffolding a discursive piece while exploring the requirements of the discursive form in detail.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in mathematics often avoided writing out steps when forming equations from worded problems, which made it harder to catch and correct misunderstandings—she kept struggling to turn story questions into equations, especially with fractions.

In Year 12 English, one student came to sessions without having done background readings or prepared notes; as a tutor noted, "if he isn't taking notes we end up going through the same content every week."

For another senior economics student, not submitting drafts or bringing questions in advance meant missed chances for feedback and slower progress toward exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

In a Vaucluse tutoring session, a Year 10 student who previously rushed through assignments is now pausing to plan her essay structure, resulting in clearer arguments and fewer rewrites.

Another high schooler, after struggling with metaphor use in creative writing, began actively incorporating feedback. His latest draft showed much sharper imagery and more precise language.

In primary maths, one student who used to hesitate with multi-digit subtraction now completes these problems confidently and has finally memorised the order of months, something she found confusing before.

Last week, she solved all ten practice questions without help or errors.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Chirag is working really well with both girls, and they are looking forward to his sessions. At the moment we are focussing on building their confidence in tackling math problems and starting to challenge them.

Josh is lovely and seems to be working well with Kate - time will tell but at this stage we are very happy

We are so happy with Hana.. She is amazing and the boys are responding really well to her.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsons Bay Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kincoppal - Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart.
