I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is the ability to allow the student to improve exponentially whilst enjoying what they are learning, because from my experience, once I have understood and learnt a concept, applying and solving problems become much easier and fun in a way. I believe not only providing answers, but instead guiding a…

A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

The most important things that tutors can do for their students include consistently preparing for every session, being kind and willing to put in a diligent effort into the sessions. I am currently a student, I believe that my personal experience with academics will allow me to relate well with my students. I am extremely patient with my…

I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Beyond course content, tutors can draw from their study, career and life experiences to help the student navigate their path. I am proud of my ability to teach and explain concepts to others effectively and thoroughly, which I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ask them for constant feedback/questions. Some students are hesitant to ask questions when they are confused, which can easily lead to them not understanding content. Hence, it is important as a tutor to actively make sure that your student actually understands what you are teaching. As a…

Try different methods as everyone is different, find something that is tailored for the student to help them excel more. I am very patient so I can explain multiple times with different methods until my student fully understands the topic. I have studied overseas so I have different approaches to the same question. I can speak English and Chinese…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

Communicate, as I believe the reason most student turn to tutoring services is due to a lack of proper communication from usual teachers leading to them misunderstanding or lacking knowledge in certain areas of a subject. I believe it is important for a tutor to communicate properly to make the student feel safe and also to allow for deeper…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, tailor lessons to their unique needs, and create a supportive, encouraging environment. What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student? Making sure that all of my student's questions are answered before the end of the lesson is one of the most important things in tutoring in my opinion. Asking question is the best way of learning and therefore answering question is the best way of teaching.…

I think a tutor needs to be encouraging so that students can develop positive attitudes towards their studies, as that will help them succeed on their own. Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. Inside VaucluseTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie worked on improving confidence with fractions and decimals, using number lines to visualise equivalence.

For Year 9, Ava focused on algebraic inequalities and started exam preparation by reviewing budget questions from her syllabus.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel concentrated on Module C English by planning and scaffolding a discursive piece while exploring the requirements of the discursive form in detail.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in mathematics often avoided writing out steps when forming equations from worded problems, which made it harder to catch and correct misunderstandings—she kept struggling to turn story questions into equations, especially with fractions.

In Year 12 English, one student came to sessions without having done background readings or prepared notes; as a tutor noted, "if he isn't taking notes we end up going through the same content every week."

For another senior economics student, not submitting drafts or bringing questions in advance meant missed chances for feedback and slower progress toward exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

In a Vaucluse tutoring session, a Year 10 student who previously rushed through assignments is now pausing to plan her essay structure, resulting in clearer arguments and fewer rewrites.

Another high schooler, after struggling with metaphor use in creative writing, began actively incorporating feedback. His latest draft showed much sharper imagery and more precise language.

In primary maths, one student who used to hesitate with multi-digit subtraction now completes these problems confidently and has finally memorised the order of months, something she found confusing before.

Last week, she solved all ten practice questions without help or errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsons Bay Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kincoppal - Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart.
