A common misconception within tutoring is the difference between teaching and doing for. The most important thing a maths tutor can do is broaden and enhance the knowledge of the students in a way they understand. Within reason, an improvement in ability is far more important than an improvement in grades. I excel at building a bond between my…

Of course, a maths tutor is there for the student academically. However, the most important thing a tutor can provide is confidence in the students. Students who may not be achieving high marks might believe it reflects their self-worth. My job is to show them that it doesn't. As I'm currently a swim teacher, I have built the skills of patience,…

The best kind of confidence builder is being able to understand something on your own so the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to get the student to a point where they don't need a tutor anymore. I'm a very patient person which I think is useful when trying to explain something tricky. I also get along great with students…

Tutors need to listen properly. Students always give signs as to how they learn best, and paying attention to those signs is paramount. Also, clear communication at their pace goes a long way. Tailoring tuition to every individual student is the best possible way we can provide value, and deliver results! I'm good at offering both visual…

Making sure that the student is understanding what the tutor is explaining and keeping the student motivated, as there isn't much use of a student being tutored if they cannot understand or if they are not motivated. I am able to explain things in a way that are easy to understand, I help the student stay out of frustration and help them approach…

The most important is to break the ice and make the student as comfortable as possible. It is important to communicate to the student that just because they do not understnd sometihing now, does not mean that they cannot improve and eventually understand. Another important factor is to consider the personality and learning preferance of the…

A tutor can boost a child’s confidence when he/ she understands the concept and solves the sums with a proper understanding. Setting small goals to complete big dreams. Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success, the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a maths tutor…

A tutor must be able to get the student to their goal without the tutor doing the work however instead mentoring the student to get there. The number one thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to tap into the student's enjoyment of a subject. I believe that if a tutor can find a way of introducing the student to a subject in a way that the student can enjoy it, all the hard work is done, and the good grades will follow. I am a good communicator, so I like to form good…

One-on-one tutors get to provide a learning experience different to the one offered in the classroom because it is a more individual form of teaching where the tutor can sync in with the pace of the student and address the student's own problems. It is important for tutors to be able to identify these weak areas or gaps in their students knowledge…

Inside Victoria PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Taylor practised using the simple and compound interest formulas and tackled multi-step problems involving Pythagoras' theorem and basic algebra.

For Year 10, Jayden worked through trigonometry questions applying SOH CAH TOA as well as bearings and compass directions, reinforcing concepts with real-world examples.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student focused on adding fractions with different denominators and multiplying or dividing fractions, using number lines to help visualise each step.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often relied heavily on a calculator for even simple arithmetic during algebra lessons—"I am noticing that Scott is very reliant on his calculator for even simple arithmetic problems"—which slowed progress in class and risked weaker mental calculation skills during exams.

In Year 11, one student skipped homework set by the tutor and instead focused only on self-selected revision, meaning gaps identified in class weren't addressed before new material was introduced.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner struggled to recall rules from earlier sessions when reviewing fraction operations; this led to confusion as topics became more complex later in the lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Victoria Point tutor noticed one Year 11 student who, after previously forgetting to add units in his answers and losing marks, now consistently includes them without prompting.

In another high school session, a Year 9 student who used to get stuck on multi-step algebraic equations began breaking down each step independently and caught her own errors before the tutor pointed them out.

Meanwhile, a younger student made a shift from needing repeated reminders about rules for multiplying and dividing to recalling most of them herself during practice, only occasionally checking her "cheat sheet."

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I would just like to say that Reagan was very professional and very reliable.   He was well suited to my daughter for tutoring. She felt very comfortable with him and she did demonstrate  growth with her math. I would definitely recommend Reagan to other people.  The only other thing is that I regret not having done it sooner.

Just wanted to let you know that we have been super happy with Ben as a tutor for Callum.

Aisling is great with Roger, she is strict yet fairand keeps him on his toes. Roger's passion for school has improve since having 1 on 1 sessions with Aisling.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Point Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victoria Point State School.
