In my opinion, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to acknowledge the students intelligence. Einstein said it best himself "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." And now we are learning more and more that there are multiple teaching styles…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to form a really strong connection with them so that the student is not afraid to ask questions and gives them someone to trust/rely on. Another important factor when tutoring is to make sure that the student truly understands the concept they are stuck on and can easily apply it to…

On of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make sure they understand the concept fully and understand how a formula was found instead of just using it to solve problems. I also believe it is important to make sure things are explained intuitively to students to help them understand the specifics of a topic better. Lastly, I…

I feel that understanding the student's moods and learning styles is very important for a tutor to teach effectively. A tutor should be able to provide confidence to the learner and be flexible in personalizing the support that they offer to the students/learners. I am resilient and adaptable. I focus more on the critical thinking and provide the…

I always wish that there should not be any weak students, so I used to teach by focusing to their weaknesses. Even though it was basic for students to know, I just teach them again to make them easy. I always ask them about the basic questions which they learned in their lower classes, this makes me realise where I have to start with in order to…

I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. I strongly believe that it's important for the tutor to motivate the student to be confident and answer irrespective of the answer being right or wrong. Students are…

Tutoring personally involves a giving and receiving conversation with evaluation on both ends. This involves engagement and communication with the tutee so that the teaching environment is comfortable and the individual feels compelled to input a concept. It is also crucial to consider the needs of each student by assessing their attention…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is inculcate in them a deep sense of curiosity about the world around us. In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. This is important because it is impossible to engage a student into learning without building a positive rapport with them. The other important thing is to always encourage them to keep trying and…

I think being more practical, by being more open. By explaining problems with examples of real life, with things they already know and have seen. I think helping them with the home work related problems and also giving them a problem or two to solve from the teaching of the day. Simple things like repetitive recalling and revising can also do…

I believe a tutor should adapt to the student's learning style. Beyond that, I also consider building a strong bond with the student, creating a supportive and comfortable environment, setting clear goals, providing constructive feedback, and instilling a sense of confidence and self-efficacy to be equally important. Ultimately, the goal is to…

Inside VillawoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Adam worked on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Sarah practised solving linear equations and inequalities, using graphing techniques to visualise solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jacob focused on surds and indices—including rationalisation—and tackled probability problems under exam-style conditions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left homework incomplete, which led to confusion with formula recall during volume and area tasks; "she does not do her homework on the regular—this results in a lack of memory pegs," noted one tutor.

In Year 10, another student relied heavily on their calculator for basic arithmetic in algebra questions, missing opportunities to build mental fluency.

For a senior student working through complex surds and indices problems, unclear written working made it difficult to spot errors or understand reasoning upon review. This often resulted in extra time spent deciphering steps instead of progressing with revision.

Recent Achievements

One Villawood tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask questions—she now regularly pauses mid-problem to check her understanding, instead of pushing through in silence.

In Year 11 chemistry, another student made clear progress moving from confusion about endothermic and exothermic reactions to confidently explaining the difference and identifying examples on their own during revision.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who struggled with division last term has started memorising key steps and can now complete short division problems independently without prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
