The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them to take a more proactive role in their own learning. Being able to show a student the genuine impact they make on their own learning outcomes and motivating them to improve for themselves is the best thing a tutor could ever do for a student as this skill and self…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and empathetic with them. I believe tutors need to understand their students, given that not all individuals hold the same skills or pace of learning and as such, need to be taken into consideration or have the lesson plans catered to their needs. Tutors must, nonetheless, put in large amounts of effort to ensure the student receives and understands theory that is taught,…

Be encouraging - Student's won't understand something straight away and this can be a source of discouragement for them. The last thing they need is a tutor who refuses to acknowledge this. Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

Inside Voyager PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Lara worked through right-angled trigonometry and bearings, applying diagrams to visualise angle problems.

For Year 8, Ethan practised factorising algebraic fractions and also tackled multiplying and dividing fractions in context.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael focused on negative integers—adding, subtracting, and multiplying them—and reviewed strategies for exam-style questions involving these concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on algebra was observed hesitating before writing answers, often second-guessing herself even when the process was correct; "she needs to be more confident in her calculations," one note read.

In Year 4 maths, there were repeated instances of confusing times tables and forgetting to add a zero in multiplication, causing her to pause mid-problem and check with the tutor for reassurance.

When tackling negative integers in Year 9, confusion set in after -15, slowing progress and increasing uncertainty.

These moments led to lost momentum during lessons and reliance on immediate feedback rather than independent practice.

Recent Achievements

One Voyager Point tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to wait for correction now spotting her own mistakes and trying extra questions without prompting, especially in algebra.

Another high school learner is getting quicker at identifying when to use formulas for similar triangles, and has started explaining his reasoning out loud—something he avoided before.

With a Year 4 student, there's been real progress memorising times tables; she now attempts the 7s and 8s by herself after struggling with recall last term, and last session completed all the division sums independently.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Lucy is wonderful. Dominique is participating well in the sessions and covering areas I feel she requires assistance in.

Things are going well. Chris is doing a very good job. Since the tutoring sessions, my daughter seems to be more positive and has stated that Chris is explaining the work well, which makes it easier to understand. I am confident that this was the right decision and can't wait to see the results.

I would like to commend Mandy on her fantastic work with Jack.  She has been so patient and we could not have asked for a better match with our son. Their hard work has paid off as we have received several comments from Jack's  teacher telling us how well he is going in maths and that there has been an improvement.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holsworthy Public School.
