The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a role model. Someone who can sympathise with the difficulties and experiences of a student and can give them effective strategies for personal development to set them ahead. Understanding goes a long way in furthering trust and academic confidence for a student. Asking them about…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a supportive and encouraging learning environment and to instill a deep understanding of the subject matter. It's crucial to build confidence in students, helping them to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than obstacles. A tutor should also strive to make…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. Adaptability and a deeper understanding of the subject matter I'm teaching, which lets me approach problems from different…

Build the confidence of the student.Whether it be in asking a question from me or confidently answering a quesyion on a paper. Also making the student see the beauty of what they are learning is important. Learning not just for the sake of a grade but learning to understand the beauty behind concepts . I am very patient and understanding, which…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to cultivate the interest and engagement of the students. In Chinese, there is an idiom that roughly translates to "Interest is the best teacher", by actively engaging the interests of students you make learning not a chore, but rather a joy. I believe that my biggest strength lies in my…

I think that the tutor acts as a mentor for the student. In this role, the tutor should encourage the students to think critically in order to find answers to their questions. By providing the means to discover the answers for themselves, the tutor ensures that the student does not merely address the 'what' of the question but is also able to…

I reckon the most important thing is to understand a student’s weakness, where they mess up or the concepts they are uncomfortable with. Through such understanding, the tutor can make personalised practice/tutoring that can help the student reach their goals. I am really patient and able to explain concepts to students in a way they can…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient with them. Recognising that every student is different, tutors must be able to adapt their teaching style to fit the learning style of the student, and they must do so with a high level of patience and understanding. Tutors need to assess, analyse and appraise. Because not every student learns the same way or comes from the same background of experience and understanding it is vital that a tutor establishes their student’s position before commencing with any tutoring. Whether they administer examination, discussion or assessment a tutor should gather…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is allowing that student to gain an appreciation for the subject area they are studying. Encourage and empower the student to continue learning and believe that they can learn the content they are about to learn. Extending beyond the scope of just being a tutor at set times is key for a student’s confidence and rapport building. A tutor is someone who has been in the students' shoes and outgrown them. Throughout the tutor's journey through school, they gain knowledge and strategies which assist them through assessments. Although simply passing on the knowledge of the syllabus is important and an essential part of tutoring, it is the strategies regarding techniques of…

Inside Wantirna SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Zoey worked on rearranging algebraic expressions for graphing and solving quadratic equations, as well as reviewing LCM, factors, and long division to prepare for her non-calculator exam.

In Year 9, Amy focused on surface area of 3D objects by tackling textbook questions and practicing backchecking techniques, along with revising atoms and isotopes for an upcoming science test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia strengthened her understanding of financial maths concepts such as compound interest and depreciation through targeted homework review and real-world application problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths often avoided writing out full working when facing unfamiliar problems, leading to jumbled steps and confusion; as one tutor noted, "her working out was sometimes incoherent because she hesitated to write unless sure."

In Year 10 financial maths, missing a single tax calculation step meant every subsequent answer was affected.

For a senior student tackling algebra and trigonometry, revision focused mainly on easy material instead of challenging questions—this limited their ability to adapt in new contexts.

During an English task, uncertainty about how to start an essay caused significant delays before any writing began.

Recent Achievements

One Wantirna South tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously missed simple marks due to untidy maths writing is now consistently setting out solutions with clear steps and correct units, which has helped avoid small but costly errors.

A Year 8 student, after struggling to rearrange algebraic expressions for several weeks, began applying the techniques independently this week and even tackled new graphing problems without prompting.

In a recent primary session, a Year 4 student who used to guess answers in long division now talks through each step aloud and checks her own work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Knox Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wantirna South Primary School.
