According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I believe firstly, students should not be pressured to do any task instead a tutor should make the task joyful and interesting for the student in such a way that they enjoy they are doing in every aspect. Secondly, I think creating a safe environment for kids so that they can easily come to us regarding any query in their studies should be…

It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, clarify complex concepts, and personalize the learning experience to fit their unique needs. Additionally, a tutor should encourage curiosity and a love for learning, provide a supportive and patient environment, and teach effective study skills. These actions…

I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. If something doesn't click the first time, I'm happy to explain it again in a different way.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. All of these examples show a great tutor. - I put a lot of care into my work. - I love seeing others thrive through my help. - I…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. I think listening to them to make sure their needs are known and understood by all parties involved. This helps create a supportive atmosphere that can hopefully allow the student to reach their potential. Making it a fun and rewarding experience for both parties is also important, as this can show a student how good the experience can be,…

The aim of accepting a tutorial for a student is to achieve higher academic result. Yet for a tutor, it is not to merely give answers straight the way. In my point of view, tutoring is receiving inquiries and giving tutors' knowledge. A tutor should acquire abilities to help students first understanding the basic ideas buried in deep, and grow…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. I find the part where students are able to regain their confidence and find motivation in the subject as most rewarding for the tutor. Inside Waterfall GullyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Divyanshu worked on differentiating rational and irrational functions from first principles in Mathematical Methods, as well as tackling stoichiometry calculations and unit conversions like %w/v and ppm in Chemistry.

In Year 11, Lucy focused on revising index laws and practicing operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing—while also converting between improper and mixed fractions.

Year 9 student Zac explored algebraic expressions by simplifying terms and substituting variables, then reviewed angles within polygons by calculating unknown interior and exterior values using diagrams for support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student, after being shown how to draw esters and carbohydrates, repeatedly skipped structural details—such as correct hydrogen or oxygen placement—which meant the oxygen atoms were often attached to the wrong carbon, as one tutor observed. This habit led to confusion in multi-step synthesis questions.

In Year 11 Maths, incomplete working was common: when tackling differentiation with eËŁ or ln(x), steps were missed, resulting in sign errors and lost marks under time pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student's untidy working made it hard to trace calculation errors when converting mixed fractions, causing repeated confusion during corrections.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Waterfall Gully recently noticed some real shifts across different year levels.

In Year 11 Chemistry, Divyanshu moved from needing frequent prompts to independently balancing tricky neutralisation reactions and even using the chain, product, and quotient rules confidently in calculus—something he'd previously hesitated with.

Meanwhile, Zac in Year 9 English went from struggling to get words on the page to writing a full-length essay within a week, showing both initiative and structure.

On the primary side, Lucy started volunteering strategies for adding fractions herself after usually waiting for guidance, and last session she factorised simple equations without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seymour College.
