The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is teach the student what they want to learn in a way that they understand, since everyone learns differently and at a different rate. Also try to make learning the subject enjoyable and not a chore for the student. This is very important since if you want to learn something you will put…

A tutor has many responsibilities including dedication to the student and giving them your full attention. Encouraging questions and answering them is important but more so perhaps explaining concepts and ideas in a way that makes sense to that student. Another important aspect of tutoring is helping students feel confident and building self…

Ability to explain complex theories in simple terms (which requires extreme clarity in thought). Ability to assess the students current understanding and to…

I feel the most important part of being to tutor is just being there for the student when they need help as well as being approachable to the student because if they aren't approachable then it is hard for a student to ask the questions they have which would be their downfall in learning. I consider my ability to think about concepts in a way to…

This means that they'll take learning with them wherever they go and always want to keep learning and growing. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to show them that they have great potential, as well as leave them with invaluable lessons that they will call upon throughout the rest of their education journey. - I am young and I am a very social person, which means that building a rapport with young students comes very…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student, according to me, is to foster an environment of kindness and encouragement. Students that need tutoring may often feel unwelcome in a classroom setting and as such, it is important to cultivate an environment that allows room for mistakes, as well as encourages a genuine excitement for…

Help the student completely understand the concepts at hand. I personally don't believe anyone can inherently be "bad at math". If anything, they just take longer to understand than others. As long as they possess enough willpower to do so, anything is possible. Another thing is that a student must leave the session learning something new. I am…

I consider the most important things that the tutor can do is to pass the passion and interest in the subject to student, so that even I don't teach them anymore, they can still find the motivation to learn and explore new things related to that subject. In addition, the tutor should have the ability to communicate in a easy to understand way and…

I believe it depends highly on the students understanding and their level of education. However in saying this, the ability to create interest and enjoyment in a subject is the most important. As from my own experience enjoying a subject and being interested in the topic helps greatly in motivating a person to understand and achieve well in it. I…

I believe encouragement is the most important thing a tutor can do. By focusing on what they have achieved rather then what they haven't, the children can gain a sense of self worth and achievement, making them more likely to want to learn more. By always being there to support them through difficult content, a tutor can develop trust with the…

Inside Watermans BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Paige worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as practicing multiplication with decimals using recent test questions.

Year 10 Benji focused on finding equations of linear graphs, including midpoints and lengths of segments, and explored relationships between parallel and perpendicular lines.

For Year 11 Math Applications, exam-style questions were used to reinforce understanding of surface area and volume calculations for various shapes, ensuring application skills ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

Incomplete homework ("Did not do homework set") in Year 8 maths meant skills with midpoints and correlation weren't consolidated before moving on.

A Year 10 student was reluctant to write out full algebraic working, which made it easy to lose track of signs and steps; as a tutor noted, "He sometimes skips ahead but still writes what he did (e.g., 3x1, x/31/3)."

For a senior student in trigonometry, practicing only familiar types left gaps when questions were presented in new forms—he struggled when equations were rearranged or required recalling surd rules under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Watermans Bay noticed Benji, a high school student, went from needing regular guidance to independently answering every question on trigonometry proofs and adapting quickly to new graph types—a big step up from earlier sessions where he hesitated with unfamiliar problems.

Paige, also in high school, used to make repeated mistakes simplifying fractions but now catches and corrects errors herself after some prompting, showing real self-reliance.

Meanwhile, a younger student was thrilled when they nearly finished their homework during the lesson and started volunteering answers instead of waiting for hints.
