The most important things a maths tutor can do is to listen, understand, adapt and provide teaching at the rate that the student is able to take in and understand. Additionally, promoting the ability and drive to self learn and to work on problems outside of the classroom is also important, as that is primarily where the understanding and learning…

A tutor should be able to help students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as this is essential for learning. This is as students who feel supported rather than…

I believe that the most essential thing a maths tutor is capable of doing is ensuring the student leaves a session confident with what they have learned. A tutor should be able to go above and beyond to explain a concept or give practice questions dependent on the way the student learns, to ensure that the sessions are completely beneficial to the…

In fact, I grew up having a few tutors but found that they all lacked one thing - constant support. I feel a maths tutor should always make themselves available to assist their students outside of class hours. I also feel that tutors should never appear intimidating to their students. I am the lead altar server at my church, and all current…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student are to understand their needs, create a custom study plan, and keep them motivated. It's essential to know what each student is good at and what they find challenging. By making a unique study plan that moves at a pace that's right for them, students can learn better without…

I am opinion I reckon the most important is for the student to know their true passion in knowledge. Many of us are forced to be good at something and spend thousands of hours of hard work. Everyone could achieve a reasonably high score if they had spent the effort in it, given they were not demotivated during the process. I believe it is most…

Inside WaterwaysTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ethan practised writing numbers in expanded form and solved digit combination challenge questions that required using each digit only once.

For Year 10, Sarah worked on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and was introduced to the discriminant, applying these concepts directly to her schoolwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James focused on finding equations of lines given a gradient and a point, then continued assigned work on linear relations using his Easter homework sheet.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student frequently avoided writing out algebra steps, preferring to do calculations mentally—this made it hard to catch sign errors and led to confusion when checking answers ("he had the habit of trying to do all the steps in his head before answering").

In a Year 11 Physics session, equations from electromagnetism were only vaguely recalled unless prompted, as no organized summary or reference list was maintained.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student with creative story ideas found transferring thoughts onto paper challenging; great verbal detail vanished when faced with the blank page. Each instance meant time spent retracing rather than progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Waterways tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently requesting clarification on using the calculator's shift function for inverse trigonometry—he then completed angle problems independently.

In Year 8, a student who used to guess at comprehension answers began searching for "hints" within texts and solved worded maths questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 4, once distracted during spelling activities, managed to write each target word three times as directed and sorted them into categories with much more focus than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aspendale Gardens Primary School.
