I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping the student believe in themselves and letting them know they can do well. This is because most of the time students self doubts leads to them struggling with content not a lack of ability. I create strategies to help my students remember content easier and I make sure that I…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

Sometimes, its not that the student is not able to understand a concept or subject, it just needs to be presented in a different manner. Inside Watsonia NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student focused on fraction addition and subtraction, using number lines to clarify concepts.

In Year 9, Alex worked through solving quadratic equations for x-intercepts and learned how to find the turning point of a parabola from its equation.

For Year 11, Sam tackled conditional probability as well as hypothesis testing, with recent lessons including discussion of real-world examples and practice interpreting statistical results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student repeatedly avoided showing full working—"kept trying to switch around numbers simultaneously"—which made it hard to spot sign errors and slowed progress with negatives.

For VCE Methods (Year 11), another student juggled multiple textbooks but "struggled to connect what he knows in a coherent manner," leading to confusion when tackling exam questions.

A Year 7 student hesitated to attempt problem-solving tasks, often saying "I don't know" rather than explaining her thinking. This reluctance led to missed opportunities for feedback and growing confidence gaps during class discussions.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia North tutor noticed Paul, a high school student, moving from needing step-by-step guidance with algebraic expressions to independently simplifying them and handling worded problems—a big shift from his earlier reliance on prompts.

Another win came when a Year 9 student, who used to avoid asking questions in class, began actively engaging during sessions and even asked for tougher trigonometry challenges after grasping the core concepts.

Meanwhile, Gracie in Year 5 showed new initiative by quickly working out percentages from fractions without hesitation—last month she'd pause at each question but now finishes her set with just minor corrections needed.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything is going well so far. The tutoring has been working well. Jamie seems to connect with Kevin. We are away next week but hopefully I can keep the momentum up with Jamie!

I have been extremely pleased with our ezymath tutor, Lawrence.  Apparently "he knows everything about maths".  He has worked diligently and patiently with my daughter and has managed to keep her focused throughout each lesson.  I also found the reports he provided about her progress detailed and considered and very helpful in providing feedback about her strengths, gaps and progress. I found ezymath tutoring very professional and easy to deal with.  There were no contracts, which makes it very flexible, the price was reasonable and the tutor came to our house. They provided a tutor who was current with the HSC curriculum and very knowledgeable about his subject.   The feedback reports that were provided at the end of each term were very detailed about all areas of the learning - both the positive and the areas she needed to work on. I would definitely recommend ezymath tutoring to other parents - it has been a very positive experience....

Bethan, gets on really well with Sydney. Sydney is enjoying her lessons and she is already getting a better understanding of her maths.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia North Primary School.
