A tutor can help increase a student's marks because teachers at school doesn't have the time to help everybody individually. With a tutor its just 1 on 1 for the most part so the main focus would be on that one student. A tutor should also encourage and increase the students confidence in the subject that they are getting tutoring for. After…

- Reminding the student that the HSC isn't as dramatic as their school culture makes it seem. Instead it is just a piece of paper like any other exam. - Hearing the student talk about their weakness and uncertainties, and working on them immediately to have optimised for their upcoming exam. - Willingness to listen with any issues a student may…

The most important thing has to be getting the student to truly appreciate the meaning behind what they are learning rather than the topic itself, as by growing this genuine interest and passion for what it stands for is all that is needed for success since the motivation will lead them further than any kind of unenthusiastic rote learning. I…

The most important things that a tutor can do are to boost self-esteem, promote independent thinking, and make learning fun. I want to help students in understanding the material by motivating them to take on difficulties alone. The ultimate goal of a tutor will be to help students develop the abilities and mindset necessary to solve problems…

Tutors should always make students feel safe and comfortable. It's important to create an environment where they are not afraid to ask questions, as curiosity is a pathway for knowledge and will assist them in their learning experience. It is also important to create an environment where students don't feel shame for not understanding content. A…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to develop relationships so that the student is entirely comfortable with being honest with the tutor about questions and concerns with academics, as well as beyond what is required by the curriculum. Help them understand the concepts that they may miss in school. Sometimes, a class can move to fast for the students, which causes them to either fall behind, or skip some important concepts/lessons. A tutor can make sure that the student doesn't fall behind, because if they do, they are likely to become uninterested and give up. A tutor can also…

Communication is the biggest aspect of tutoring. Without it, individuals will not be able to successfully grasp content and may not perform as well. During my own time tutoring, I would utilise a reiteration/imitation method where I would ask the tutee to explain what I had taught back to me to see if my point came across. The most important part…

Inside Werrington DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student focused on basic maths skills, including telling the time and revising the 5 times table.

In Year 8, Alysha practiced multiplication and addressed class worksheet questions about rise over run and calculating gradients, reviewing these using her homework for extra reinforcement.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student worked through algebraic manipulation techniques and explored probability concepts by tackling related school exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student repeatedly arrived at lessons without completing assigned algebra homework, which made it difficult to identify and target misunderstandings—"I gave him homework from the last lesson but he hasn't done them."

In Year 11 Physics, another student did not finish the module booklet before exams, missing key topics like the photoelectric effect.

Meanwhile, a primary student in Years 3–4 avoided memorizing times tables, instead drawing groups for every multiplication or division task; this slowed problem-solving and blocked progress in more complex operations.

Missed revision and unfinished tasks meant that feedback could not be put into action immediately.

Recent Achievements

One Werrington Downs tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to hesitate when stuck on division problems—now, after working through examples and seeing her errors, she asks for help as soon as she's unsure and applies the feedback right away.

Another high schooler recently tackled harder questions from past exam papers independently, only needing support on the toughest one and fixing his mistakes after two corrections.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously guessed at word spellings now takes time to check meanings in the dictionary before reading aloud new words like "fairy rings" and "decaying."

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penrith City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cambridge Park Public School.
