I believe it is most important for a tutor to tailor their teaching according to the needs of their student. Many students learn in different ways such as visual or through different compounding activities to build a strong foundation before moving on to more difficult concepts. I believe being able to teach a student in the way that is most…

A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. They should always encourage and find ways to explain something step-by-step such that everything is explained and can be linked back to a central idea. I am patient, friendly, and I can see and understand why something can be difficult to understand. I encourage and can relate to finding…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. They need to know very well about the students and are wise and knowledgable enough to give good advice and make sure students love listening to the advice. I love to solve questions. Above all, a teacher should be compassionate. Compassion matters more than anything else. I feel that I try to understand students rather than simply trying to teach them. We all have weaknesses, and being able to identify them, especially when they are not easily visible, is the most important…

Recognise which areas of learning a student struggles with and focus to improve these areas instead of rehearsing already understood information. It is also extremely important to encourage students to ask questions and not to be inclined to feel embarrassed. A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

Inside West HindmarshTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava focused on calculating mean, median, and mode for data sets and practiced two-step word problems involving fractions and percentages.

For Year 8, Ethan worked through algebraic expansion and simplification of brackets, as well as solving equations by rearranging terms to isolate x.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Priya completed trigonometry homework using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to find unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles, applying these skills to real-world worded problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student frequently left set homework incomplete, particularly on decimals and negative numbers, which limited progress when new concepts were introduced in lessons.

"He needed reminders to go back over past mistakes and work out why the answer is what it is," a tutor observed after repeated revision sessions.

In Year 11 mathematics, another student's working became difficult to follow—steps for breaking down complex 3D shapes or expanding brackets were often omitted or only partly shown. This meant errors (such as missing a squared term) weren't spotted until much later, causing frustration during test preparation.

Recent Achievements

One West Hindmarsh tutor noted a Year 11 student who, after initially hesitating to tackle worded algebra problems independently, now translates them into equations on her own and completes homework with only minimal help.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor observed that she has started verbalising each problem-solving step aloud—an encouraging shift from her earlier quiet guesswork—which led to her correctly calculating cylindrical surface area without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once needed guidance for every operation is now breaking down multi-step questions by herself and choosing the correct operations without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
