The most important qualities are patience and compassion. When a tutor is knowledgeable about the subject and shows understanding towards students who are struggling, those students will feel safe and be more open to learning. I provide examples to clarify concepts, and I'm willing to explain the same material multiple times until my students…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

While I think it's important to assist students from an academic standpoint, I also think it's important for tutors to help students develop a sense of purpose in their studies. Teaching students to direct their motivations towards their goals, rather than solely their grades, can be just as important for their future as anything a tutor can…

I believe the most powerful way a tutor can aid a student is by giving them confidence. More than often, students can show more vulnerability in a one-on-one session than in a classroom surrounded by their peers, and so the best thing I can do is use these private sessions to impart confidence in the students by making them see ways they can…

A good tutor must know about the skills and talent of each student in his/her class. I can assess and adjust my tutoring methods for each students to achieve maximum results from them and to improve their skills. I can be very supportive with their studies and subjects. For me, one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is interaction. As interactive the session will be, more output will one get from their students. I’ll try to become their friend rather than being a typical teacher. Homework and self study will be two of the key tasks of the session. One of my biggest strength as a tutor is…

I will consistently encourage all my students to always try, and practise, and try again, until they master whatever they were first struggling with. Their dreams become my dreams for them, so I will never let my students give up on reaching their goals. Improvements do not happen overnight, but whenever they do happen, no matter how small, I…

I am patient, enthusiastic, and always come prepared with the necessary knowledge for the subject matter. I try to lead students to discover the solutions…

Besides grades, I would say that a tutor is also essentially teaching the student life skills such as responsibility and perseverance. I had this unmotivated student. A tutor can be the perfect guidance. Besides, a tutor should have abilities to understand the performance of an individual and carry on the task in an easy and correct way. A tutor always should be smart and capable to conduct the task as per the student's abilities. As I have already worked as a teacher for more than three years before. The…

In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

Make the student feel safe is number one and to inspire a love for learning is the goal! Ensuring that the tutor presents them self in a way where the child is comfortable in your presence so they can learn and ask question is vital also. Knowing the child’s individual learning preferences and catering to this makes a huge difference also in the…

Inside West RichmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ava worked on equivalent fractions and explored the relationship between multiplication and division through hands-on activities.

For Year 9, Ethan focused on trigonometry concepts and practiced solving linear equations, building confidence with step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Charlotte reviewed logarithms—applying log rules to solve equations—and tackled related problems without a calculator to strengthen her algebraic reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's "messy/disorganized" books and sheets in Maths made it harder to keep track of assignment instructions, leading to confusion during multi-step problems—"fixing this may help her keep track of tasks," a tutor observed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student appeared unmotivated and tired, which impacted his willingness to engage with new content from the start.

In Year 8, attempts at worded maths problems often stalled because the student struggled to identify what questions were actually asking for—sometimes skipping over terms or misreading instructions. In these moments, frustration crept in before any calculations even began.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in West Richmond noticed Tia now regularly catches her own mistakes when drawing gradients or solving equations—last session she paused before making an error and corrected it herself, which is a big shift from relying on hints.

Another secondary student, Zoe, went from struggling with statistics to independently tackling similar problems after just one walkthrough; she's also much more organised for exams than earlier in the term.

In primary years, Natalia has started spotting missed parts of questions and goes back to fix them without prompting—in today's session she even finished all her analogue clock problems unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tenison Woods Catholic Primary School.
