I believe that as a tutor, one's tenacity is essential. Over the course of tutoring, students will experience difficulties and so it's important that a tutor should keep students motivated and interested. Aside from academic achievements, my strengths are my encouraging approach to learning and diligence in ensuring that a student is able to…

The most important thing that tutors should do is understand the abilities of the students. After that, we can decide how to start the subjects with them. Moreover, we should teach students to think in different ways because it will develop their thinking ability. A good tutor should be patient at every time and should listen to others.…

The most important thing for a tutor to be able to do is listen and gauge the progress of the student. There is not any point in just explaining the content verbatim - the student is here because they could not just pick up the textbook and consume the content. From there the flexibility of the tutor's approach is vital to maximise the student's…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be the support they can provide, doing this allows the student to feel as though they have something they can rely on during stressful times. My strengths as a tutor would be that I am patient, easygoing and confident. I am willing to go over a problem over and over again until a student…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be a role model. This shapes the students work ethic, which not only helps their organisational skills, but allows them to be willing to learn. Being a mentor is vital, since if a students basic needs in terms of stress isn't met, then learning is at the bottom of their list of priorities. Empathy,…

A tutor to a student is like a mother to their child; rather than being a human textbook, tutors have important roles in listening to the student's needs and wellbeing. Joanna Reid, Westleigh

Inside WestleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Ruby focused on trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, and tangent), using calculators to solve for unknown sides and angles in triangles, as well as exploring real-world applications like angles of elevation and basic depreciation problems.

Year 10 student Daniel completed work on trigonometry with compass bearings before moving into index laws and tackling multiplying and dividing surds.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia reviewed financial mathematics by calculating wages, salaries, taxes, and comparing simple versus compound interest calculations in preparation for her upcoming quiz.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student forgot to bring completed homework, making it harder to build on last week's work in algebra.

For a Year 11 lesson, an over-reliance on the calculator led to skipped double-checks when rearranging equations; as noted, "he made a sign error but didn't spot it until I asked him to show each step."

In Year 7 trigonometry, confusion around remembering SOHCAHTOA meant progress stalled mid-question.

Meanwhile, a senior student avoided underlining keywords in exam practice and digressed from questions—this left key marking points unaddressed and answers less focused than intended.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Westleigh recently saw a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints now persist through tricky trigonometry problems independently, only checking answers at the end.

Another high school student who'd previously rushed through assignments has started underlining keywords and self-questioning during complex financial maths tasks, leading to noticeably fewer careless errors.

In a Year 5 session, a student who once avoided algebraic equations solved simple linear equations without a calculator for the first time, finishing all of them correctly before moving on to new material.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Ben is very diligent and commited. He tutored both my daughter's who showed marked improvement. He prepared for sessions and always kept us informed of the girls progress. He is a thoughtful and considerate guy and the girls responded well to his demeanour. I would highly recommend Ben to anyone that wants a tutor to elevate their child's academic performance.

Rueben has been a great fit for Gabrielle. He is an excellent tutor and goes through the steps for the maths problems. Gabrielle feels he explains things so she can understand. Rueben is very easy to talk to and he communicates with us. He is also up with the curriculum.

The tutor (Grace) was excellent and I would highly recommend her to any client.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thornleigh West Public School.
