In my perspective, a tutor must be able to properly assess the student's needs - whether they are struggling with eg multiplication, or understanding of algebra that make it hard for them to do harder questions, or even motivation or confidence issues, or comprehension problems, and to be able to adapt to these need/s of the students and improve…

I think its most important to listen and consider your students by asking questions, attentively listening to their responses to determine if they have underlying misunderstandings or misconceptions about the material. By letting a student explain the topic in their own words, I can diagnose the issue and perhaps offer a new perspective on how I…

Marti, Wetherill Park

Inside Wetherill ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Andrew focused on subtraction using different strategies and tackled word problems involving money, along with revising time concepts like calendars and converting between units such as seconds, minutes, and hours.

For Year 10, Judy worked through algebraic fractions—simplifying, factoring, and adding/subtracting them—and also revised surds in preparation for an upcoming test.

In Year 11 Chemistry, Sam covered Lewis dot diagrams to understand chemical bonding types and practiced applying different separation techniques required by the course.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were observed across year levels.

In Year 4 mathematics, reliance on mental calculation—"gets lost sometimes" when not writing down steps—led to confusion with subtraction and slow progress in single-digit operations.

During a Year 9 trigonometry session, homework was often incomplete or rushed; one lesson note read, "Attempted homework minutes before our session – only half was completed."

For a senior student preparing for an exam, lack of organization meant the upcoming test was only discovered in class, leaving minimal time for review.

Moments of tiredness and distraction resulted in forgotten steps and lower motivation during key lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Wetherill Park tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student, who previously hesitated to use her calculator, growing noticeably quicker and more confident as she tackled complex maths problems—by lesson's end, she was solving each question with increasing speed.

In Year 9, one student who usually guessed when confused started actively asking for help instead, leading to clearer understanding of algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled last week with number lines not only finished his homework independently this time but also correctly explained previous mistakes.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Sarah is great the tutoring is going really well and Anjelika looks forward to her classes :)

Just thought I would let you know Eden received the highest mark in her math class for the year common test.  The teacher was very impressed and I had one very happy daughter.

We are very happy with Matt , he is a good personality match for James and he is finding the sessions most valuable.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wetherill Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like William Stimson Public School.
