In my opinion, the most important things that a tutor can do for a student would be explaining concepts to them in ways that the individual student can understand as well as aiding them in memorisation and application of the concept tutored. Moreover, I strongly believe that it is extremely important for a tutor to leave a student without self…

Be patient. Not everyone is able to understand everything at the same rate and it can take time. You have to be patient with the student and be able to explain the same concept ina variety of ways to be able to adapt the core principles of the topic to the student. A tutor needs to be able to inspire a student to strive and succeed in their chosen field, while still maintaining a personal, friendly relationship with them. A tutor must help the student to understand the coursework, but more than that must teach the student how to think (not just what to think) and how to apply that knowledge in many…

Personally for me, the teachers at school never went into what you really need to succeed in the HSC, and being one student in a class of 30 meant most times your questions were left unanswered. Having being tutored, having someone available to ask questions that I did not understand was very helpful throughout my schooling career, and I hope to…

Inside WhittingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Eliz worked on double-digit multiplication, long division, and was introduced to the concepts of HCF and LCM in maths, while also practising descriptive essay writing and expanding vocabulary in English.

Year 9 student Amber focused on algebraic equations involving negative numbers as well as quadratic expressions, including their introduction and review.

For Year 12, Marcus tackled advanced calculus skills such as differentiating with the chain rule and quotient rule, finding tangents and normals to curves, and anti-differentiation for areas under curves using integration.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often forgot to bring her calculator and school books, which meant she couldn't always show progress on Pythagoras and trigonometry in sessions—"I haven't got my book again," she said, so practice was sometimes limited to what could be remembered.

In VCE Maths Methods, one student relied heavily on mental calculations even when a calculator was allowed, slowing down problem-solving with surds and Pythagoras.

A Year 3 learner hesitated during basic addition due to doubts about multiplication tables; this made it hard for her to move confidently into division tasks or keep up speed in classwork.

Recent Achievements

A Whittington tutor recently saw a Year 12 student become much more methodical with multiple-choice exam questions—she now carefully eliminates options using her knowledge of gradients and stationary points, rather than guessing as she used to.

In Year 10, another student who previously needed step-by-step help tackled simultaneous equations independently, applying the point of intersection technique confidently for the first time.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once hesitated before answering maths problems is now noticeably quicker and applies tips straight away; last session, she finished all her subtraction questions without pausing for reassurance.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Kai and Ben are getting on greatly. Kai had a big win last week. He went from 53% on a maths test to 88%! He received champ of the month award and a chocolate bar! He was thrilled! We are starting to see the results now. Thank you Ben for everything!

Aslinn is currently travelling along well. We have valued Jess's contribution to her reaching her goals in maths. If Aslinn needs further assistance we will have no hesitations in using your service.

My daughter progressed so well with the support of your tutor, Eliran and we think she is ready to work independently. Thank you for providing a great educational service. We will keep you in mind if we need your support for the future.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcomb Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Whittington Primary School.
