The best tutors and educators remember the importance of being lifelong learners. I feel a tutor can help the student by personalizing the learning according to the needs of the student by incorporating connections to the students' interests. A tutor must teach to the student's strengths and minimize the student's weaknesses. Tutors should…

A tutor can show the beauty of the subject and make the student love the subject. Teachers are considered as one of the people who shape someone's future or career. By giving good pieces of advice by basing myself on my personal experience as a student, I'll make sure that the student is always on the right track. I'll try to inspire students regularly by for example talking about awesome stuffs in science and maths which would…

A tutor can be kind and patient with the student and open to any kind of question, however basic it might be and not ridicule the child. The tutor can also repeat the same thing until the student had finally grasped the concept so that they are completely confident. Having grown up around teachers, I have learnt a lot from them. I have learnt to…

Learning is all about association. You cannot go to C without having to go through A and B. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to focus on the basics first and only if the basics are clear should the tutor proceed with the new concepts. Individual attention to each student and identifying their individual…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. I like to teach students in a way that is interactive and not directive.I feel that the more students learn about the…

Tutors should try their best to inculcate a certain level of intrinsic motivation in their students, rather than having students work just because the teacher or tutor says so. This increases the chances of consistent work and improvement while also increasing the level of enjoyment while working. It is also important to help them gain an…

I believe that creating a safe space where the child is comfortable enough to ask as many questions as they need is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Patience, admitting if I don't know content (and then researching it for next time), time management skills, the ability to re-explain concepts in different…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Never give up on students. The best thing a tutor can do to for a student is to get the student interested in the subject so that s/he will be able to not only excel at tests and quizzes in school but also pursue it further. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be proud of all the improvements the student has done. It's not about congratulating them for being a high achieving student. Instead, we should congratulate them for any improvement that they have done, since that is one step closer to success. I believe one of my strengths is…

In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. Inside WilliamstownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Emily focused on adding and subtracting fractions and worked through worded questions involving long division to strengthen calculation skills.

Year 8 student Liam practiced expanding brackets in algebra and solved problems involving linear relations, including plotting points on Cartesian planes.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Olivia tackled quadratic equations and explored index laws, using example problems to reinforce her understanding of powers and roots.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student relied heavily on calculators for matrix and network problems; as one tutor observed, "it would be worth revising how to calculate matrix problems by hand."

In Year 8, written work was often disorganized—answers weren't lined up when working with decimals, making it hard to track mistakes.

During a Year 5 session, a student repeatedly erased and rewrote answers rather than showing working steps, which made it tough to check reasoning or catch errors.

For a Year 9 learner, skipping notation and not simplifying fractions meant correct answers took longer to verify during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Williamstown tutor recently noticed Eddison, a high school student, becoming much more independent in his problem-solving—he now shows all his working out when expanding brackets and grouping like terms, which is a big change from when he'd rush to answers without explaining steps.

Chelsea, also in high school, has started using factor trees to break numbers into prime factors on her own and can clearly explain the difference between index and expanded form—a real leap from needing prompts last term.

In Year 5 maths, Genevieve finally clicked with the concept of area by reasoning through why side lengths are multiplied; she then solved several worded problems involving area without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Williamstown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Williamstown North Primary School.
