Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. I am able to compartmentalize well, and…

One of the most important things is to putting in effort to prioritise student's learning and personal needs. Becaues every student is unique, a good tutor will be in-tune with students' individual learning patterns and thoughts. It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: Build Confidence – Creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is crucial. Encouragement helps them believe in their abilities, which is often half the battle. Clarify and Simplify Concepts – Tutors…

A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

In my opinion successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students. Also tutors listen and communicate early and often with parents and teachers. The willingness to help and to commit time, energy, and patience. If the tutor is doing for the sake of doing, it shows the lack of commitment. I truly believe that teaching is a passion-driven job. To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

A tutor or a teacher builds his student's knowledge, clears any misconceptions if he have, clears their sight between right and wrong behaviors, help them to achieve their learning goals and to decide what they want to be in future. Apart from a good communication and knowledge, patience is one of the most important strengths required in a teacher…

I think stoking an interest in self education/exploration of a subject is more important than helping them simply pass a test (though that is important as well). When a student wants to research a topic on their own time, they not only have found a way to improve, but also might have found a future passion or career choice they never knew they…

As a tutor, i believe that the attitude is very important as it can affect the student's emotions when studying the subject. With a positive attitude, they will be more happy when studying the subject therefore they will put more effort to work hard on it. Furthermore, I believe that a tutor should be good at explaining and observant because each…

Changing the perspective of the subject. I know too many teachers that have made an already challenging subject even more difficult. Vesna, Newport

Inside Williamstown NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sophia focused on algebraic expansion and factorisation, as well as solving equations using substitution.

Year 10 student Marcus worked through sketching straight line graphs and determining x- and y-intercepts from equations.

For Year 11, Emily tackled differentiation basics and applied these skills to maximum and minimum problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, a student was asked to finish all questions and send them by email, but the work remained incomplete—meaning gaps in problem-solving practice before assessments.

Another student in Year 8, as noted, "needs to do more problems about factorization," yet homework tasks weren't consistently finished or reviewed.

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, reliance on calculators surfaced: one lesson flagged that matrix calculations should be revised by hand to truly grasp underlying methods. These moments meant missed chances for feedback and left key skills underdeveloped ahead of major exams.

Recent Achievements

One Williamstown North tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions now confidently tackling both sine and cosine graphs, even volunteering to try tangent graphs without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, took the initiative this week to explain which parts of her homework she didn't understand—then worked through those sections until she could solve similar problems independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, a student who once rushed through answers has started checking his calculations carefully and finished all ten workbook questions with no mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newport Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australian Islamic Centre College.
