A tutor can make use of the two kinds of experience he/she has. Firstly as a current/former student himself, he can impart a deeper and thorough understanding of the subject keeping in mind the future academic curriculum and its practical applications. Secondly his experience as a tutor means a patient engagement with his student, where in the…

I believe taking ample effort in preplanning lessons, thinking about the topic for different perspectives is vey important. The most important thing, I think is to stick with the student till they understand the topic and not race through the course plan. I think I am very creative in approaching problems. A successful teacher never lets a student feel like they cannot achieve their goals. The goal can be anything from solving a problem to passing the course or even their career goals. The most important quality a student needs for anything is self-confidence and teachers can help a lot by motivating students. I am very empathetic and don't mind…

Listen to their ideas and help them realise how they can be moulded to fit the criteria that is set for them to meet. This is also coming from my own perspective of what I'd expect, as most times teachers impose their ideas on students and they are left alone to not be able to think for themselves. I can explain concepts quite well, and I make…

The most important thing a tutor can do is analysis about the student and giving him/her assignments according to his level. An important aspect of tutoring is not hindering the student's creativity. I believe every student has a different learning style. If a student requires additional assistance, the tutor is responsible for identifying it and providing extra support, while being patient with them. It is our responsibility to encourage students to be creative with…

I think a tutor's first goal should be to build a relationship and trust with each student by giving them individualized help and attention. Our daughter is enjoying having someone (who isn't either of her parents, and has more patience than we do as well!) take her step by step through what she doesn't 'get' and then work out strategies that will help her understand what the question is asking and how to approach it.
Roisin, Winston Hills

Inside Winston HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Kent focused on solving simultaneous equations and revising trigonometry concepts, including working through bearing problems with diagrams.

Year 11 student Miles worked on factorisation techniques and deepened understanding of logarithms, using real-world word problems to reinforce concepts.

Meanwhile, another Year 10 student tackled coordinate geometry by practicing mid-point and distance formulas as well as plotting points on graphs for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without finishing several homework pages, making it difficult to identify which skills needed extra support.

In Year 11, "she didn't complete any homework from the exam booklet I created for her"—missing out on practice that could have boosted confidence before assessments.

One Year 5 learner struggled to set out multiplication working neatly, often omitting steps: as a tutor wrote, "needs to structure out work in a manner that ables others to understand progress."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student kept forgetting formulas between lessons and had trouble applying them under timed conditions during class quizzes.

Recent Achievements

One Winston Hills tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously rushed through algebra questions is now taking time to structure her working, which has led to fewer errors and better marks in class quizzes.

A Year 9 boy, who used to hesitate when stuck, is starting to ask the tutor clarifying questions instead of giving up—a real shift towards independent problem-solving.

In a recent Year 4 session, a student who often avoided homework arrived with it completed and could explain her methods out loud before tackling new material.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Baulkham Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Winston Hills Public School.
