In my view, the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to instill confidence. I firmly believe that there are no "bad" students, only "bad" teachers who fail to understand their needs and provide appropriate support. As a tutor, I prioritize creating a supportive environment where students feel safe to ask questions, make…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is create a supportive environment where the student feels confident to make mistakes and learn from them. Tutoring isn’t just about covering content, but also about helping students build study skills, curiosity, and help them develop future life skills. When students feel understood and…

Helping them want to learn. To give that idea to a student to want to learn more and enjoy what they're doing, not just in the easy parts but the challenging ones that pushes them to want to find out more. Figuring out how someone learns a specific topic best and how to structure information in an understandable way. I'm also very…

Definitely listening to our students. While we are there to teach them and help them along, each student is different and learns in a different way. Through previous tutoring experiences, I found that when I asked my students "What works for you?" or "How could we improve how we do our lessons?" and listening to what the students say and…

It is important to instill interest in the student to learn. Students have many different subjects they will be studying and for them, some may not be as important as the others. While it is good for students to understand their interest in life and focus on it, it is also important they cover all the basics in the school curriculum. My approach…

Make content fun and understandable for you. My number one thing I disliked about school was how confusing some topics were presented, I believe that I can provide a fresh perspective on a lot of topics and subjects that most courses could not. I'm a very patient and understanding person who can fit a lot of subjects into different contexts for…

I think continuous support is the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Without having continuous support, the student cannot rely on their tutor to help them when they are having difficulty. I think my strengths are that I am patient, I've had great exposure to younger students. I also have an open mind which allows me to help…

Give them confidence! Students often require a tutor not only because they cannot cope with content, but because they have a lack of confidence in the subject. I have a lot of experience in working with students, allowing me to understand them better and therefore be able to effectively help and teach them. I am also continually engaging in…

I believe the most important thing is firstly identifying where the student is with their understanding of a topic and then working in small steps from their based on the students' needs and style of learning. Then ensuring the student is challenged constantly in order for the 'learning' to occur and celebrating small wins to provide an enjoyable…

Inside WoodbridgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jazmine focused on division using hands-on games with tokens, and also practised reading both 12- and 24-hour time.

In Year 8, Ben revised Pythagoras' theorem by solving problems involving unknown sides in right-angled triangles and moved on to trigonometric ratios for finding side lengths and angles.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student James worked through probability questions using Venn diagrams to find probabilities of different combinations, then reinforced skills with practice on linear equations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not bring his notes to a test preparation session and, as one tutor observed, "he was unable to do many questions without help of his notes"—misplaced materials led to wasted revision time.

In Year 7 English, another student's creative writing draft had "some grammar errors," but she often missed teacher feedback on answering the question directly; analysis tasks were left incomplete because she didn't apply feedback mid-task.

A Year 11 student over-relied on referring back to notes during algebra practice instead of memorising laws, slowing down progress in exam conditions and leading to lost marks when recall was needed under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Woodbridge recently noticed some great shifts: one Year 9 student who used to rely on written prompts is now confidently explaining the laws of indices out loud and asks for clarification when confused, rather than guessing.

A high schooler preparing for a surds test surprised himself by working through tougher equations that he'd barely attempted at school before—he even tackled these without guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was previously terrified of division not only managed to separate tokens into groups but recited her 4-times table from memory during practice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Midland Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Governor Stirling Senior High School.
