It is very important that a tutor understands the strengths and weakness of a student and approach them accordingly. A personalised approach would be the best method to adopt and it is important to help the students become independent learners. A tutor should prepare the students to be life long learns with a never ending thirst for acquiring…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is not pressure students and understand that everyone learns differently. Not all students will get something right away, and what matters is being patient and staying with them through the process until they understand. I believe it is about making them feel supported instead of rushed, so they can…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Finding unique ways to interpret notes and…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for students is to listen, which helps us understand their needs and enables us to help them effectively. I also think preparation on a tutor's part is a very important part of the relationship with a student. I would consider myself to be a great listener, which comes in handy in tutoring and I my…

For the student to be able to see me as someone he/she can rely upon. I say this because I was not very good at mathematics but when I had a tutor at the start of year 8, she was always friendly and made it very easy to talk to her. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

A tutor can make use of the two kinds of experience he/she has. The most important thing a tutor can do is to be open and offer an open exchange of exchange of information that allows a student to freely delve into a subject. Support. Providing a great amount of support and motivation is crucial for a student’s education path. It was so simple to order a tutor. Within a few days our tutor was at our place. Our tutor is excellent, he knows exactly what our son needs after we discussed what we needed help with . Our son gets on really well with our tutor and is enjoying one on one learning.

Inside WoodcroftTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Veda focused on strengthening fundamentals by tackling assessment questions across number operations and was introduced to algebraic thinking through basic problems.

For Year 10, the lesson with Arjun targeted trigonometric equations and identities, including simplifying expressions using key formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 session for Sarah centred on ratios and rates as well as statistics, practising interpretation of data sets and proportional reasoning in context.

Recent Challenges

The Year 8 student's maths book showed confusing structuring of working out, which led to errors in equations, as a tutor observed.

In Year 3, forgetting to borrow when subtracting money or not knowing when to subtract caused repeated mistakes during problem-solving.

One senior student rarely revisited past topics, so key methods faded and revision tests were harder than expected—especially for HSC content.

Another high schooler skipped writing steps in algebra, making it tough to spot sign errors until late in the process.

Missing or incomplete homework was noted across several grades; this slowed recall and progress on new material.

Recent Achievements

One Woodcroft tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from hesitating on trigonometry questions to working through medium-difficulty problems independently and explaining her reasoning out loud.

Another high schooler, previously unsure about how to tackle worded algebra problems, has started identifying where she gets stuck and now asks for clarification instead of guessing—making it much easier to address gaps directly.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with time-telling last term can now read the clock accurately and draw different times on her own; in her last session, she completed every question without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Doonside High School.
