Tutor can guide the student effectively. Tutoring doesn’t mean delivering lecture and completing the curriculum. It is responsible for holistic development of the pupils. Most important a teacher can do is to check the students individual growth and planning for the same. I have more than 4 years of teaching experience. I have taught formally as…

I think a tutor should help build on students’ current thought processes and methods through asking them how they’d first approach a challenging question and their next steps using the given information. This is because when people are stressed they resort to what they know best. As such, in test conditions students will be less likely to…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is to not just provide their students with an answer but to guide the student through the process. As the saying goes "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" helping a student understand the thought process helps them consolidate…

The most important criteria for a tutor should be to provide the student with a high quality of knowledge. It is the tutor's duty to effectively help their student without ever giving up on them while being perceptive on how they learn, as everyone learns differently. My strengths are that I persevere for my students and I'll be able to relate to…

Firstly, a tutor can be a mentor and build a good relationship with the student by making him/her comfortable. Secondly, the tutor should not spoon-feed the student, but rather, scaffold the learning experiences for him/her. This can be only achieved when the tutor provides appropriate feedback to the student by making him/her understand areas of…

Not expecting every kid to be the same in the class. Everyone has their own understanding power so a teacher can help them in guiding and supporting in their difficult situations. A good tutor should be able to extend past simply explaining things; they should be able to tweak their approach to match the unique learning abilities of each student. One should not just regurgitate information, but rather make break it up into pieces that are digestible by each person. Above all, I think a hood tutor pushes a student to do…

The most important things as a tutor, for me, is to be friendly and approachable. A tutor that is not any of those aspects will make the student uncomfortable and if students will have any questions, they will think twice of saying it. Being friendly and approachable will also make the student feel less stressed with Math. My strength would be to…

Most important thing I believe is to encourage and motivate the student. Especially in year 12, students may get worn out and tired from the heavy coursework they need, it's important to encourage them and not let them give up on their goals they set at the start of the year. I believe it's important to keep them positive and eager to learn and I…

Important things to be a tutor is to be honest with your student and not "sugar coat". You need to be able to tell them the harsh realities as you are there to assist in their wellbeing and creative a positive outcome for both student and teacher. First important thing is the encouragement. Tutor should appreciate the student for his work, at the same time, he should encourage the student to improve more. Be willing to share your own experiences. By sharing information about what you have encountered, the student may feel relieved that he is not alone. Sharing experiences and lessons learned goes a long way toward building trust and support. It also helps the student build self-confidence. Warrick, Wyndham Vale

Inside Wyndham ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lachlan worked on analysing the structure and poetic devices in "Bushfires, rushing rivers of hell" and then composed his own free-verse poem using an emotion as inspiration.

In Year 9, Aiden practiced solving linear equations and reviewed key concepts from recent algebra homework to strengthen foundational skills.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Olivia focused on identifying properties of 2D shapes such as corners and sides, and practiced counting patterns by going backwards in the hundreds for number fluency.

Recent Challenges

Several students in Years 7–12 showed process gaps impacting their progress.

One Year 9 student's algebra work lacked neatness and clarity, with "pen & paper needs work," making it hard to trace errors or revise efficiently.

In Year 10, another rarely dated notes or included teacher comments—this made revisiting class discussions and tracking progress over time difficult.

A Year 11 student skipped back-checking after questions in trigonometry, so sign errors lingered undetected; as one tutor observed, "must start Back Checking after each question."

Without these process habits, confusion persisted during revision and test preparation.

In primary levels, a Year 4 student's homework was often disorganized: answers weren't shown alongside working out, which made error correction challenging and feedback less effective.

Meanwhile, a younger learner hesitated to write ideas down if unsure—a moment of silence rather than risking visible mistakes—so practice opportunities slipped by unnoticed.

Recent Achievements

A Wyndham Vale tutor recently noticed Aiden's improvement in high school maths: after struggling with area and perimeter, he now solves these problems more accurately and identifies where he needs extra help, showing real self-awareness.

In another session, Lachlan actively asks follow-up questions during geometry lessons and even corrects his own misconceptions as they arise.

For a younger learner, Olivia now confidently works through the process out loud and completes her homework independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manor Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College - Wyndham.
