It is the responsibility of a tutor to provide subject matter and help a student excel in the subject while understanding the student's standard, capabilities and needs. I can make a student independent and help the student for his/her personal growth too. The most important things a tutor can do for a…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to bring out the confidence in them. The confidence will allow them to keep trying and never give up. The other most important thing a tutor can provide the student with is understanding. The understanding of the student's strengths and areas of improvement. As a tutor, my strength…

Understanding the weak points and listening to their problems helps establish trust between the tutor and the student. This makes a tutor approachable. A tutor should never make their students feel that any question is dumb. Imparting the idea that all questions are good questions and students should never fear while asking anything is one of the…

A tutor should be able to boost a student's confidence by providing them with the relevant knowledge needed to do well in their tests and exams. It is also important for the tutor to be compassionate with the students. To be there as a support structure, not just a tutor that's only available during the assigned time. A tutor is really another support avenue for a student's education is what I've found in my experience as both a tutor and a student frequenting tutors. Another key aspect of a tutor is to be able to not only build the knowledge of the student…

According to me, a tutor can help his student improve and be a stepping stone in achieving his goals . A tutor can make his student be a better person , and can inculcate the genuine love of learning and knowledge and showing others what it looks like to be passionate about his future. Sharing knowledge with the students is the main thing but…

Most importantly, the tutor should be able to help the student achieve their desired academic results whilst under the tutor's tutelage, as this is the whole purpose of being a tutor. However, it is almost equally important to instill confidence in a student, that they will feel comfortable enough to step out of their comfort zones. More often…

I believe that it is important to help students to understand how academic skills can lead them to their goals, and to encourage them to work hard, doing their best to make the most of opportunities that come to them. The primary role of a tutor is to help students understand and clarify challenging concepts. Inside YallambieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on algebraic techniques using Chapter 4 of the Edrolo textbook and also worked through transposing between mixed and improper fractions.

Year 8 student Sam practised for an upcoming test on probability and statistical analysis, including real-world examples to consolidate understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Zoe concentrated on Cartesian coordinates from Chapter 9 of the Edrolo textbook and explored applications by plotting points on coordinate grids.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's incomplete homework is making it difficult to build on core algebra skills—"he will not progress any further in Mathematics unless he tends to his homework."

In Year 7, poor attention span led to missed steps when handling decimals and multiplication tables, with focus drifting mid-question.

For a senior student, as noted, "the complete disregard for time and lack of participation severely hampered the potential learning outcomes" during geometry revision.

Messy handwriting and reluctance to read or write have also slowed comprehension in upper primary lessons; requests for neater work are frequent before clarity improves.

Recent Achievements

One Yallambie tutor noticed a Year 10 student who, after initially struggling with fraction addition, pushed through and now solves algebraic equations using fractions—something he found intimidating at first.

In a recent session, two brothers in Year 8 went from distracted to enthusiastically competing against each other to answer percentage questions, showing new drive and focus compared to earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to hesitate on three-digit addition now completes these sums without error, finishing an entire set of problems correctly by himself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with Baily. She is very competent in math, but is also a very good teacher.  She makes learning fun and the boys' relationship with her is developing well. As a person, Baily has a lovely manner about her, is very respectful, but confident.

We are happy with Jordan so far. He seems to have acknowledged the areas Kate has problems with and is giving her homework tasks for these, as well as helping with some current class topics. She already seems to be feeling better about maths.

We're really happy with Rachel, and Sophie is relating to her well. We are seeing positive results in Sophie's math grades at school already.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Streeton Primary School.
