I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student believe in their own ability to learn and grow. It’s not just about explaining the material—it’s about building their confidence and showing them that they’re capable of success. Often, students already have the potential; they just need someone to remind them…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to build both a professional and friendly rapport with the students at the beginning. This helps to set a comfortable and safe learning environment. We all learn differently, in different ways, and at different times. A student may be a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic (movement) learner. Some…

A tutor has to be flexible enough to change their teaching style and methods according to the student's learning styles and capabilities. No two students are the same which means adaptability becomes a key skill that a tutor has to have and be able to provide a well tailored tutoring style for the student. Moreover, a tutor has to be kind and…

Another important thing that a tutor can provide is motivation. This can be done by reassuring and supporting a student through a potentially…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teaching the content in a way suited to that students learning style. I break things down to a very simple level. I like building everything up from nothing. In chemistry before talking about organic compounds and the interactions for example, I like to talk about the individual elements at…

As a tutor, I think helping students reach their academic goals is a given, but how one would go about doing that would also reflect on the students. Thus, tutors can also help students develop positive and important qualities that would prepare them for the life beyond school. I would say that I am patient and organised, which are good qualities…

In my opinion one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and boost their confidence. From my previous tutoring experience, I know that the students are a lot smarter than they give themselves credit for and are just scared that they are wrong, so helping them with their confidence can go a long way in…

In my opinion, tutors have the responsability to ensure that the students have learned and correctly understood a topic. I always liked the metaphor building a car. A mechanic can tell you how to build it piece by piece but you can not replicate that process unless you have really understood it. In addition, tutors have an important role in…

I think the most important thing is the personalized experience a tutor can give a student. As a tutor, rather than just explaining the content of a topic, I believe that it is more to understand the doubts a student may have. If the student does not bring up any doubts, the tutor must then slowly check their understanding of the topic bit by bit by prompting questions frequently. Another thing to keep in mind is to never give the answer…

Local Reviews

Rosie is tutoring my child in year 7 maths and has built up a great rapport with her. Through my observations I can see that Rosie has a strong understanding of maths and is able to explain ideas and concepts very easily. She has a lot of patience and always checks my daughters understanding and offers alternative explanations where needed. Rosie is always punctual, friendly and polite and I am very happy with the progress that has been made to date.

Inside ZetlandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student William worked on correcting homework covering simple interest and surds, along with catching up missed class content.

For Year 9, revision with Ben focused on dividing and multiplying fractions as well as tackling negative and fractional indices in surds.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Xavier practised converting remainders into decimals, solved word problems, and labelled different types of triangles using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left several steps unwritten when tackling algebraic equations, as one tutor noted: "he tried to do everything in his head instead of writing it down." This led to confusion over signs and made errors harder to spot.

In Year 11, incomplete homework meant that basic perfect square practice was missed, so extra time had to be spent revisiting foundational rules rather than progressing.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on division often forgot her materials at home, causing delays while searching for worksheets and slowing the start of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Zetland noted that William, a Year 10 student, has started attempting every maths question instead of skipping the tough ones—a real shift from earlier sessions when he'd often give up if stuck.

In Year 11, after struggling with surd problems last term, he was able to recall the steps and solve similar questions independently this week, using his own notes for support.

Meanwhile, Elliott (Year 5) used to stay quiet during lessons but now openly talks through his reasoning on each English question and even asks for extra examples when something feels tricky. Last session, he wrote down all his ideas without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Green Square Public School.
