As I have mentioned above, every student's different capabilities and strategies to learn in their own way need to be considered before even beginning to tutor them. If a tutor teaches without having this in mind, there are chances that even after months of teaching, the student will not grasp the information as well as he/she probably could if…

I believe be able to help students in study is one important thing. However helping them emotionally and in life could be essential for them. As they might have had a bad day at school or didn’t get good marks in exams. There’s few things I believe that’s more important than study. I believe I can help kids understanding a concept during…

To build a positive professional yet a meaningful relationship with the student. The student sees me as a friend and mentor rather than just a teacher. This will build confidence and trust in the student and motivate him/her to achieve his/her goals. I love to give insights to my students about the research and incredible things that happen at my…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is create lessons around a student's skillset and ability. If they are struggling with a certain topic, I like to focus my attention on this area in my lesson so they may be able to get a better understanding. I believe one of my strengths is being able to explain a concept in different ways so that…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is instil an interest in learning over anything else. I believe that this creates a life long passion to learn which is an incredibly vital skill in todays society. I think my strengths as a tutor are in connecting with students. Education is one of the most important assets one can possess. I believe that I serve an onus to the youth to teach and share ideas with them. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, support their individual learning needs, and encourage independent thinking. It’s not just about giving answers it’s about helping students develop the skills to solve problems on their own. A good tutor creates a safe, supportive environment where…

Not only teaching a subject, but making they more confident and independent. For me, the best teachers/tutors that I had were those that showed me the importance of having a "problem solving" mentality, instead of simply learning how to get some questions right. Building confidence is the best thing a tutor can do for a student. Students may need tutors because they don't enjoy the subject, they find it hard, they do poorly, or all of the above. The tutors' role is to be the balance between a teacher and a friend. Helping them understand the questions they have in a relaxed environment is a good way to…

Effective methods of studying, instead of encouraging them to spend too much time and get stressed of the massive load of knowledge. One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. Inside AberfeldieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sarah worked on factorising and expanding algebraic expressions, including an introduction to the "Magic X method" for quadratics.

For Year 8, Jack focused on trigonometric ratios—using diagrams to connect sine, cosine, and tangent with right-angled triangles—and revised graphing lines by finding gradients and axis intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily practised scientific notation alongside significant figures and applied exponent laws in problem-solving contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left algebraic fractions homework incomplete, meaning skills didn't progress between sessions.

In Year 10, one learner avoided writing out steps when rearranging equations, as the tutor noted: "She only used her calculator and couldn't replicate the method afterwards."

A Year 7 struggled with messy working—numbers and steps ran together on the page, which made checking for mistakes much harder.

Meanwhile, a senior student lost motivation after struggling with vocabulary in essay writing; frustration grew each time sentences were marked incorrect, leading to slower improvement in both confidence and output.

Recent Achievements

One Aberfeldie tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after struggling with mistakes on matrix assignments, he recently completed his work without errors and started presenting his solutions clearly for exams.

In a Year 8 English session, Sam—who used to be hesitant sharing ideas—spoke up more than usual and received positive feedback from his teacher on his essay.

Meanwhile, Julia in Year 5 has begun taking her own notes during lessons rather than waiting for prompts, showing new independence she didn't have at the start of term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aberfeldie Primary School.
