I think that taking the time to come to understand their student(s) is a vital thing for an tutor or teacher, doing this gives the student the teaching method they are most comfortable with and allows for smoother teaching, as well as giving the student(s) much needed support. I also think that knowing when to push the student to their limits will…

To give to the student not only the knowledge of how a task is completed or formula applied, but an understanding of the logic in why this is utilised or possible. The ability to apply mathematics to a situation through the correct understanding of what needs to be done and what knowledge can be used to accomplish that end, is more necessary and…

The most important thing as a maths tutor is to help them understand the importance of English and mathematics. If something is unclear, it is my duty to research and resolve the issue so the student can learn correctly to progress in the future. If the student enjoys a certain subject, he/she may potentially be a passionate teacher in the future.…

As a maths tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be…

Having both been the tutee and the tutor, I believe that it is imperative that a maths tutor is supportive of the student and caters their teaching to the student's specific needs. Tutoring is only truly effective when the student is completely engaged with the tutor and I believe that this can only happen when the student believes that they are…

A tutor should not just teach, but they should listen to their students, seek feedback and use that to improve their teaching. It is important to develop trust with students so that they feel comfortable asking questions, expressing their concerns and identifying topics that they may want to strengthen. In doing so, the tutor can gain a greater…

I think one of the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is be somewhat a friend rather than just an instructor or teacher. This is because I believe establishing a bit of a personal bond is very important for a successful tutor-tutee relationship as the student is more likely to be open about more of the issues that they face,…

Helen, Allambie Heights

Inside Allambie HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ethan worked through time calculations involving hours, minutes, and seconds, as well as multiplication and division strategies.

In Year 10, Chloe focused on polynomials by practising polynomial long division and applying the remainder and factor theorems to find roots.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Samuel explored trigonometric identities using step-by-step algebraic proofs and also tackled coordinate geometry questions related to lines and points in the plane.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated to complete past papers under exam conditions, instead "prematurely checking answers before finishing," which led to less realistic test practice and confusion when grading.

In Year 9 algebra, a student often avoided writing out full steps, especially with minus signs—this made small sign errors hard to spot until the very end.

For a Year 6 learner, slow progress on division was linked to not breaking down numbers into easier chunks or using algorithms, so multi-step calculations took much longer than needed.

When a Year 12 student skipped systematic listing of factor pairs in quadratic problems, it resulted in missed solutions and extra time spent backtracking.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Allambie Heights noticed Fenna, a Year 12 student, now works through even the toughest HSC past papers almost entirely on her own—she used to hesitate and wait for hints but lately checks her answers independently and corrects most mistakes without help.

Filios, also in high school, recently tackled calculus topics he found overwhelming at first; by lesson's end, he could handle all question types with little guidance and started using worked textbook examples as part of his revision routine.

Meanwhile, Jasmine from primary school solved two adult-level logic puzzles by herself after struggling to find entry points just weeks ago.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Ben is very diligent and commited. He tutored both my daughter's who showed marked improvement. He prepared for sessions and always kept us informed of the girls progress. He is a thoughtful and considerate guy and the girls responded well to his demeanour. I would highly recommend Ben to anyone that wants a tutor to elevate their child's academic performance.

Rueben has been a great fit for Gabrielle. He is an excellent tutor and goes through the steps for the maths problems. Gabrielle feels he explains things so she can understand. Rueben is very easy to talk to and he communicates with us. He is also up with the curriculum.

The tutor (Grace) was excellent and I would highly recommend her to any client.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Allambie Heights Public School.
