Adaptability – every student is different. For many reasons some students perform better than others. Ability to involve with students and understanding where they are lacking would allow me as a tutor to teach the building blocks of learning. This is in line with the hope that most students keep on a tutor or a teacher that can enhance their…

Acctually be involved in their learning and improvement, that personal care goes a long way. Not brushing off inconsistencies, and persisting to teach a topic that a student may not well understand until they're able to understand it. I'm able to connect well with the student, and able to figure out their needs. I'm able to adjust accordingly and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help guide them in a non-intrusive and non-judgmental way. Every student has their own path in life and they all may be in different places on that path. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is help them think about where they want to go on that path beyond just studying…

I believe it is the confidence that tutors can develop in their students, so that the stress and nervousness is lessened when it comes to taking the end-of-year exams, or even just a simple test. Also, to be able to cultivate an understanding and mutual relationship with the student so that there is no shyness or hesitation when it comes to asking…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do is to transfer the positive energy about learning to the student. A good tutor should also create an appropriate learning path that leads to the student's goals and achievements. I try to understand the student's abilities and needs. Not only teaching a subject, but making they more confident and independent. For me, the best teachers/tutors that I had were those that showed me the importance of having a "problem solving" mentality, instead of simply learning how to get some questions right. I think a tutor should help build on students’ current thought processes and methods through asking them how they’d first approach a challenging question and their next steps using the given information. This is because when people are stressed they resort to what they know best. As such, in test conditions students will be less likely to…

Tutor should be able to understand the students' mindset as well as the subject knowledge student has before starting the tutorial. Try to make things simple so that students can grasp easily. Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. A tutor has a duty to help a student the best they can, regardless of the circumstances. Mary, Altona

Inside AltonaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Madison focused on similar triangles and practiced trigonometry and Pythagoras' Theorem with exam-style questions, while also exploring compound interest as part of a class validation task.

In Year 10, Liam worked on consolidating his skills in applying Pythagoras to worded problems and using trigonometric ratios to find unknown side lengths in triangles.

Meanwhile, another Year 10 student, Ella, covered bearings in trigonometry and revisited measurement concepts including volume and surface area calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student, when solving worded trigonometry problems, tended to avoid writing out steps and key words, making it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred. This meant errors often went unnoticed until review time.

In Year 8 algebra, over-reliance on the calculator for identifying gradients in linear functions led to confusion about core concepts; as one tutor put it, "he could find the answer but struggled to explain how he got there."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student often forgot to bring completed homework, leaving gaps in practice that slowed progress with times tables and division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Altona noticed that a Year 9 student, after initially hesitating to ask for help, began actively seeking clarification on trigonometric ratios and then independently solved for unknown side lengths using SIN, COS, and TAN.

Another high school student who used to skip steps with linear graphs is now confidently plotting points and explaining the meaning of rise over run without prompting—she even developed her own summary sheet for an upcoming SAC.

In primary, one student who would guess times tables has started working them out aloud step by step, moving from 10×3 backwards and discovering new patterns on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Altona Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
